Located on the southwestern slope of Bachen Township, southeast of Bayi District in Nyingchi, Tibet, and sitting at an elevation of 3040 meters, the Bachen Ancient Cypress Reserve spans 120 acres. This area, boasting concentrated growth of ancient cypress trees, represents one of the most intact pure cypress forests in the region.

A Realm of Ancient Giants

The ancient cypress, also known as the “Yarlung Tsangpo cypress” or “Shuipa” in Tibetan, belongs to the cypress family of gymnosperms. Globally, the cypress family comprises 32 genera with 150 species, of which China is home to 8 genera and 36 species, including 4 genera found in Tibet. These sacred trees thrive on the sunny and semi-sunny slopes along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley and its tributaries, flourishing at altitudes between 3000 and 3400 meters.

Adapted to the region’s unique climate, which features concentrated rainfall from June to September and average annual temperatures of 8.4°C, these cypress trees present a lush, green canopy, making them ideal for both ornamental and high-quality timber.

Among these ancient beings stands the “King of Ancient Cypress,” the oldest and largest natural cypress in China, with a height of 51 meters and a circumference of 18 meters. Its massive trunk and sprawling canopy, covering 637 square meters, have made it a “sacred tree” revered by locals and admired as “the world’s most magnificent” by visitors worldwide.

The “King of Ancient Cypress” is estimated to be over 2500 years old and has been designated as a nationally protected species. The wood of these ancient cypresses is prized for its beauty, durability, and aromatic properties, finding uses in construction, bridge building, and furniture.
