Norwich Market is one of my favourite places to visit in this fine city.

Located at the heart of Norwich, between the City Council Offices, Norwich Castle and St Peter Mancroft, Norwich Market has a buzzy atmosphere and a diverse array of stalls.

From fresh food, fruit and veg, to clothing, plants, hot food, household items and more, it’s an absolute treasure trove.

Plus, it’s a great place to sit and people-watch. On a bright summer’s day, perch in the gardens with your lunch (dodging the seagulls). If it’s raining, hide under the market’s covers and stay dry and watch the world go by.

My favourite Norwich Market stalls

and eat it

Selling sweet treats, such as cookies and brookies (a cross between a brownie and a cookie), their homemade products are hard to resist. I’m a big fan of the Snickers brookies.

Big Deal’s Bodega

This stall’s insane New-York-style sandwiches are amazing. They’re absolutely rammed with fillings and I have never successfully finished one in a single sitting. My personal favourites from the past: salt beef with pickles or fried chicken.

Bread Source

Who doesn’t love Bread Source these days? But having an outlet in the centre of town is super handy. Of course, their sourdough is unsurpassed, but I recommend trying their cardamom buns. Doughy and fragrant, they’re delicious with a cup of tea.

Bun box

As a bao bun obsessive, I love this stall. I especially love that they always have veggie and vegan choices on the menu, so I have a choice of options. If I’m feeling really hungry at lunch, I’ll order a donburi bowl with a bun on the side. Amazing!

Herbs & Spices

AKA The Spice Man (well, in our house, anyway). As previously mentioned, I try to make sustainable choices whenever I can, so buying my herbs and spices on Norwich Market means I can get them plastic-free and top up the jars I have at home. Plus, they seem to have every herb and spice imaginable.

Italian Street Food

I’ve not been to this stall in a while. That’s because their pizzas are just too good. With lots of toppings, with a crisp and smoky base, I have to resist going there too often!

Lucy’s Fish & Chips

An absolute classic. Lucy’s has been on Norwich Market for as long as I can remember. And rightly so. Their fish and chips are great. It’s little wonder there’s always a queue at lunchtime.

Mike, Deb & Sons

Sitting in pride of place at the front of Norwich Market, I often visit this stall for fresh fruit & veg without plastic packaging. They always have a fantastic selection of seasonal items, which is super handy when I’ve run out of snacks when I’m in the office!

Fresh

Another favourite for lunch. Fresh always has a great choice of curries and noodle soups. The flavours are always rich and complex and there’s always a great veggie option.

Orient Express

I’ve been frequenting this gem since I came back from Thailand a few years ago. Having taken a cookery class, I wanted to track down both fresh and dried produce in order to recreate the flavours of my holiday. This stall has a great selection of Asian food and drink products, such as holy basil and Thai aubergines. Plus, I often buy something random, just to try something new!

Planted

If you’re looking for a last-minute gift (or just want to treat yourself), I recommend a visit to Planted. They have a fantastic selection of plants, pots and gifts for the green-fingered. I’m particularly loving my parlour palm at the moment, which brings a splash of colour to my office.
