Today, I saw one of my favorite singers on television, the famous Bono Vox, leader and vocalist of the renowned Irish rock band U2, recounting his visit to Machu Picchu in 2012, describing it as “an impressive place.” This made me remember my adolescence when my mom and I used to hike the Inca Trail every year to reach Machu Picchu. We used to bring an MP4 player and a portable speaker to listen to music along the way. Songs like “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey or “Beautiful Day” by U2, among others, motivated us to enjoy the journey.
The Inca Trail was built over 500 years ago during the reign of Inca Pachacutec and served as a means of transporting food and a communication network among people. Hiking the 46 kilometers, visiting different archaeological sites, admiring incredible landscapes, and experiencing the diversity of flora and fauna is undoubtedly one of life’s best experiences. However, if you want to take this trek to another level, you should accompany it with good music.
Science has shown that music influences humans in many ways, both emotionally and physiologically. In this sense, the right music can help you focus, motivate you, and/or relax you depending on the rhythm and lyrics. It’s worth mentioning that the Inca Trail consists of four days of hiking and ranges from moderate to challenging in terms of difficulty. Listening to music during certain stretches will help you enjoy the journey and connect with nature and your fellow travelers.
