If you booked through an agent (either online (OTA) or brick-and-mortar) then you are subject to the terms and conditions of that agency that you agreed to when you booked the ticket. Some are saying that there are no refunds, others are giving you a refund minus their processing fee, which can sometimes be substantial, and still others are giving full refunds without any fees.

The problems with flight delays and cancellations that have plagued US travelers this week are mostly over — except at struggling United Airlines.
The most common reason behind flight delays and cancellations include:
- Air traffic control delays.
- Bad weather.
- Late arriving aircraft.
- Mechanical delays.

What to do when United cancels your Domestic or international flight?
If United cancels your flight, you currently have two distinct options: You can either accept a rebooking from United. You can choose to have your money refunded.
They still have to get you to your destination.
They will put you on a different flight, typically operated by United (but depending on the situation they might ask another Star Alliance carrier to step in; within the US, they might also book you on another carrier, say Delta or American).
If this results in a bad delay, you can typically also look for alternative flights (in which case, definitely consider other Star Alliance carriers) and try to rebook yourself on one that works better.
If the cancellation is due to widespread delays (typically bad weather), it’s probably better to try and rebook it yourself through the app or on the website rather than calling.
Even if you do call, it’s always better to have some options prepared: look up what other flights are available with United or Star Alliance and take some time to research alternative airports.
If you are already at the airport and you have lounge access, it’s usually easier to get assistance at the lounge than at regular customer service desks.
You can file a United Airlines flight cancellation compensation claim if your flight is cancelled within 14 days of departure. Denied Boarding due to Overbooking – You may also obtain compensation if you are denied boarding the flight because of overbooking.
If you are involuntarily denied boarding, your flight is cancelled, or your flight is delayed by more than two (2) hours beyond its scheduled time of departure, United will offer you the following free of charge:
- A) If the expected departure time of your new flight (if any) is the same day as the departure date of your originally ticketed flight, you are entitled to receive: Meals and beverages commensurate with the expected waiting time; and Two telephone calls and sending of a notice by fax or e-mail, at your election.
- B) If a stay of one (1) or more nights becomes necessary or a stay additional to that intended by you becomes necessary:
- Hotel accommodations; and Transport between the airport and the place of accommodation (hotel or other location if you have chosen to stay elsewhere at a reasonable distance from the airport) We may also limit or decline your right to care if the provision of care would itself cause further delay.

- 3) You are informed of the cancellation less than seven (7) days before the scheduled time of departure and you are offered re-routing, allowing you to depart no more than one (1) hour before the scheduled time of departure and to reach your final destination less than two (2) hours after the scheduled time of arrival.
- In addition, you may not be entitled to compensation if your flight was cancelled because of special circumstances which were not under United control, and the cancellation could not have been prevented even if we would have taken all reasonable measures possible to avoid the delay or a labor strike.
How to rebook a canceled flight on United
If you booked with United and your travel plans have changed, you can rebook or cancel online. Should you want to call their customer service, do so when your travel is within 72 hours. If not, you can do it online or thru the app.

If you decide to cancel your United flight within 24 hours of booking. All United tickets — even the lowest-cost, basic economy seats — can be canceled for a full cash refund if your ticket was purchased within 24 hours and the purchase is at least a week before departure.
For those not affected, you can request a refund. You can check the fare rules if your ticket is eligible for a refund.
