History of National War Memorial

The history of the National War Memorial can be understood on the basis of the following years – In the year 1960: – The first thing about the National War Memorial started in 1960 when the armed forces of our country requested the government to build a memorial to commemorate the soldiers who laid down their lives in a war. However, this project was not taken seriously during that time.

In the year 2006: Again in 2006, after constant demand, the UPA government formed a committee to consider and investigate the demands of the armed forces, headed by Pranab Mukherjee. In 2006, the Ministry of Defense had decided that the war memorial should be established around India Gate. But the Ministry of Urban Development rejected it, calling the area a heritage area.

In the year 2012: On completion of 50 years of the soldiers killed during the war in 1962, in October 2012, the UPA Government accepted the long-standing demand of the Indian Armed Forces and allowed the construction of the National War Memorial. Granted, However, this decision was also strongly opposed at that time.

In the year 2015: After the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, Narendra Modi’s tenure started. He allowed the construction of the memorial and museum building near India Gate in 2015, and also honored the sacrifices of soldiers who were martyred during many wars.

In the year 2016: – This year, for the design of this war memorial and war museum, a worldwide competition was organized, which was launched through the portal MyGov.in.

In the year 2017: – The result of this competition came in the year 2017. In which SP Plus, a Mumbai-based studio, won the design for the battlefield, while the Chennai-based Web Design Lab’s design was declared the winner for the war memorial. After the design final, its construction started in the same year.

In this way, the history of this war memorial is very old, whose construction work has now been completed.

National War Memorial Inaugration Program

In 2018, this monument was to be inaugurated, but its construction was not completed by then. Its construction work was completed in January 2019, but the work of the war museum is not completed yet.

Nevertheless, the inauguration ceremony of this memorial was held on 25 February 2019, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it. Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Chiefs of Air Force, Navy and Army were also involved in this ceremony. During this ceremony

After this, the last Chakra Raksha Chakra has been made, which surrounds these three chakras. More than 600 trees have been planted in this cycle. Which are displayed like a wall? These three walls represent the soldiers who protect the country.

In the competition organized for the design of this memorial and museum, a total of 427 presentations were received for the war memorial, while 268 presentations were made for the war museum.

Every evening in this memorial, it is decided to salute all the martyrs with the military band, which is called the Retreat Ceremony. Also, on the last day of the week i.e. on Sunday, the Change of Guard Ceremony will also be shown.
