The Vanishing Gas Station
Thousands of gas service stations have closed in the last few decades. Abandoned gas and service buildings are pretty standard in rural parts of the United States. The world around us has changed, and that change has affected every life forever. I now do a lot of reminiscing, pondering, reflecting, and dreaming of the days past that I have experienced, and I would not have changed a thing, including these old abandoned gas stations.
The ancient building is located near South Whitley. This photograph was taken in 2007 on one of my exploratory road trips through the rural United States. I have always been drawn to old buildings with a history, and a place in the community. This building was probably built in the 1930 or 40s when full-service stations started popping up throughout the country. At first, offering gas and cars became more complicated and added repair services. This simple building has two garage bay doors and a small covered bay where one or two gas pumps once stood. Unfortunately, the windows are broken, but the pop culture 7up soda sign remains.
