Mumbai’s Pre-Monsoon Preparations Ensure Flood-Free Season, Assures BMC Chief

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently emphasized the importance of avoiding water logging issues in Mumbai during the upcoming monsoon season. During an inspection of the city’s pre-monsoon preparations, he cautioned Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials about facing severe consequences if the city experiences flooding. However, the BMC Chief, Iqbal Chahal, confidently assured that Mumbai will remain flood-free, even in the face of heavy rainfall.

Comprehensive Inspection Validates BMC’s Readiness

Accompanied by senior BMC officials, CM Eknath Shinde thoroughly inspected critical locations to assess the progress of pre-monsoon works. The inspection included drain-cleaning activities along the Mithi in Bandra east, the Vakola river in BKC, the holding pond at the Dadar flower market area, and the Lovegrove pumping station area. The primary objective of this inspection was to verify whether the BMC’s preparations were on track and capable of handling potential waterlogging concerns.

Foolproof Measures to Ensure Public Relief

CM Shinde expressed his concern for the citizens and urged the BMC administration to implement foolproof systems in waterlogging-prone areas. He emphasized the need for efficient management and relief measures to ensure that people do not suffer due to flooding. It was essential for the civic authorities to proactively address any potential issues by deploying appropriate strategies and resources.

BMC’s Flood Prevention Initiatives and Focus on Infrastructure Maintenance

Responding to CM Shinde’s call for a robust system, BMC Chief Iqbal Chahal highlighted the city’s resilience to flooding. He confirmed that even if Mumbai experiences intense rainfall of 300mm in a single day, flooding would only occur in a cloudburst-like scenario. Chahal assured the public that the BMC has already taken proactive measures by constructing holding ponds and installing floodgates to redirect excess rainwater into the sea.

Chahal further instructed officials to ensure thorough cleaning of city nullahs, focusing on reaching the hard base rather than merely quantifying the amount of silt removed. He also emphasized the need to repair broken footpaths and maintain clean roads to facilitate smooth drainage. Chahal emphasized that the BMC would acknowledge and appreciate commendable work but would take appropriate action if drain-cleaning efforts fell short of expectations.

Refuting Allegations and Ensuring Transparency

CM Shinde addressed allegations raised by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena regarding the BMC’s allocation of INR 600 crore as advance mobilization funds to contractors for road tenders. He rejected these claims, emphasizing the importance of transparency and ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and effectively.

By ensuring comprehensive inspections, proactive flood prevention initiatives, and maintaining a high standard of infrastructure, the BMC remains committed to safeguarding Mumbai from flooding during the monsoon season. With a focus on public welfare and responsive action, Mumbai can face the rains with confidence and minimal disruption.
