Dahisar River Bridge Phase 1 finally open after 2 years from Collapse

The first phase of the reconstructed Bridge over the Dahisar river at Srikrishna Nagar in Borivali (East) was inaugurated by the state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday, March 11.

The bridge forms a crucial link connecting Srikrishna Nagar in Borivali to the western expressway and was shut for motorists after a portion of it collapsed in October 2021.

Major Development for Borivali as Bridge Reconstruction Begins

In January 2022, the BMC had invited bids for the demolition and construction of the bridge.

Work on widening and reconstruction of the bridge began soon after, using integrated deck slabs.

Completion of Phase-I of the Reconstruction

The bridge has a total length of 41.5 meters and a width of 22 meters.

Phase-I of the project involved the completion of two lanes, which spanned 11 metres of the bridge, while the remaining will be completed in Phase-II after obtaining the no-disturbance certificate from the Forest Department.

The completion of this phase is a significant step in restoring the crucial link between Srikrishna Nagar and the western expressway.

Forest Department Clearance for Phase-II

However, work on the remaining 11.30-metre wide bridge is still awaiting clearance from the forest department.

One part of the bridge near SGNP falls under the forest department, and the BMC has appointed a consultant to obtain a no-disturbance certificate.

The commencement of the second phase of work is subject to the receipt of the no-disturbance certificate from the Forest Department.

Presence of Dignitaries at the Inauguration

The inauguration of the reconstructed bridge was attended by several prominent figures, including Local MP Gopal Shetty, Local MLA Prakash Surve, MLA Praveen Darekar, MLA Manisha Chowdhary, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) P. Velarasu, Deputy Commissioner (Circle 7) Dr. Bhagyashree Kapse, Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Ulhas Mahale, R Central Division Asst., along with Commissioner Sandhya Nandedkar and Engineer-in-Chief (Pool) Sanjay Koundinyapure.

Importance of the Bridge

The bridge serves as a crucial link connecting various parts of Borivali to the western expressway, making it a significant route for commuters.

The collapse of a portion of the bridge in 2021 caused severe inconvenience to people, who had to take longer routes to reach their destinations.

Thus, the reconstruction of the bridge is a vital development for the region, addressing the connectivity issue and providing a safer and smoother commute for people.
