16. John Wood Mansion

When Governor William Bissell passed away in 1860, John Wood succeeded him as the 12th governor of Illinois. He erected the John Wood Mansion between 1835 and 1838.

To allow Wood to build a massive estate, John Cleveland constructed the 14-room mansion for the Woods, which was moved from its original position to its current location, about a block east.
