With the unique lava landscape of Hawaii, one thing that differentiates Hawaii from places such as Florida is that if you get an oceanfront or ocean view Vacation rental it does not necessarily mean that you are near a Beach.   The Big Island of Hawaii is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, but yet has fewer sandy beaches per a mile of shoreline than the other islands.  Due to this, if being near a beach is important to you then you want to really consider where you stay.

Over ¾ of the sandy beaches are found on the west side of the island, which also happens to be home to the world class resorts of the Big Island.  The most unique beaches, green and black sand, are found on the southern end of the island, which does not offer many places to stay.

Hapuna Beach is the most well known beach on the island, but there are not any Vacation Rentals directly on the beach.  The Westin Hapuna Beach is the hotel that is located on the beach with the best access.  The hotel section of the beach is somewhat separated by rock from the public side of the beach.

The Mauna Lani Resort has two beaches, but only one has vacation rentals on the beach.  There is a nice white sand beach on Mauna Lani Bay with a break giving it very calm waters. This beach is home of many sea turtles so you are almost guaranteed to see turtles resting on the shoreline or while you are snorkeling.  The Mauna Lani Terrace offers 1-3 bedrooms condos and offers easy access to this beach.  The Mauna Lani Beach Club is available to guests of Mauna Lani Terrace, but is a descent lengths walk.

Waikoloa Beach Resort has one of the largest beaches in the area, Anaeho’omalu Bay, that spans over a mile in length of white sand beach.  This also has a break so offers very calm waters where you can find kinds playing, paddleboarders, snorkelers, and much more.  Kolea offers 2 and 3 bedroom condos and 4-6 bedroom luxury private homes and offers with direct beach access.

Worth noting, the Hualalai resort, which is home to the Four Seasons Hualalai does not have vacation rentals with easy beach access.  The Four Seasons Hualalai sits on the beach alone.  Most vacation rentals there do come with a golf cart that gives you an easy means to drive to the beach.  Kua Bay is an amazing beach and is a short drive from the resort that we recommend driving too.

There are many other beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii and some of them have a small selection of private homes on them, but for the most part the Big Island of Hawaii does not allow vacation rentals in those areas.  There are a few vacation rentals that have received permits that allow them to be rentals in those areas, but there are not many.
