Canyon Ferry Lake

Canyon Ferry Lake is a reservoir on the Missouri River in the U.S. state of Montana, and the third largest lake in Montana. The dam was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1959 to help control flooding along the Missouri River, to provide irrigation water, and for hydropower generation, navigation and recreation.

The lake is formed by Canyon Ferry Dam at river mile 195 on the Missouri River near Townsend, Montana, twenty miles upstream from Helena. In 1987 the lake’s normal pool elevation was changed from its original 3626 feet above sea level to an average elevation of 4100.

Canyon Ferry Lake is a reservoir on the Missouri River in the U.S. state of Montana, and the third largest lake in Montana. The lake was created by Canyon Ferry Dam, which was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as part of their multiple purpose flood control project to provide irrigation water and control flooding along this part of the Missouri River. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Helena along Highway 200 near its junction with Highway 65; its shores are within Lewis & Clark National Forest.

The reservoir can hold up to 1.5 million acre-feet of water when full at its normal surface elevation of 479 feet above sea level (a.s.l.). Canyon Ferry Lake is about 15 miles long with an average width of one mile and maximum depth of 65 feet near its northeast end where it drains into Rock Creek Reservoir via an outlet structure known as Ice Harbor Dam.[1]

Canyon Ferry Lake is a reservoir on the Missouri River in Montana. It was created by Canyon Ferry Dam, a concrete gravity dam that stands just north of Townsend and about 20 miles (30 km) upstream from Helena. The lake has an elevation of 1,166 feet (355 m) above sea level and covers 479 square miles (1,240 km2).

In 1987 the lake’s normal pool elevation was changed from its original 3626 feet above sea level to an average elevation of 4100 feet to increase its capacity and make room for additional flood control during spring runoff. Its maximum capacity is 1,948,000 acre feet (2.4 km3).
