I have been utterly obsessed with Australian Rock Music ever since I first discovered Tame Impala’s album Innerspeaker back in 2010. So much so, if you look at my Spotify account, about 80% of it consists entirely of Aussie bands.
From my all time favourites Psychedelic Porn Crumpets who can turn the place into a mosh pit on the opening note, the swelling psychedelia of Pond that you can get lost in for days, to Sticky Finger’s reggae beats that make you crave a Sunshine Coast beach, Australian rock music is as diverse as the landscape of its origin.
One of the things I love the most about Australian modern rock is that their sound is often so careless. Sometimes this manifests itself in a feisty, two fingers up, ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ kind of way. Other times there’s an utterly laid back vibe – an attitude that the Aussies are especially well known for. Somehow their music just doesn’t sound as uptight as British or American rock.
Lyrically, I find Aussie bands are really fun and test the boundaries creatively. Especially when they incorporate some humorous elements about their ‘culture’. Listen to Violent Soho’s ‘Covered in Chrome’ and Dune Rat’s ‘6 Pack’ and I’m sure you’ll get what I mean!
If you’re preparing for a trip to the land ‘down under’, want to discover some awesome Aussie bands or simply want to transport yourself to a thriving rock scene (that I personally think beats London’s), turn this up loud and get involved.
Make sure you follow the playlist on Spotify to pin it to your sidebar.
