3 Unrivalled UK Road Trips To Drive This Summer

If you’re planning a UK road trip this summer, it’s a great idea to check out some new and recommended routes that you may not have previously considered.

Whether you’re driving by car, campervan or in a cool convertible, the UK is full of fantastic road trips to embark on, enabling you to enjoy Great Britain with a fresh perspective.

Before you set out on your dream UK-based road trip, ask yourself whether you have the perfect car for your journey. Rather than forking out on expensive flights, you might prefer to hire a comfortable campervan or invest in an open-topped car to experience something new with your family, or as a special treat.

If you’re driving your own vehicle, it’s important to ensure your car is equipped to cope with the trip ahead. As John Haynes – a specialist in the repair and restoration of Mercedes vehicles – advises, “Carrying out a multi-point health is vital to ensuring your trip is comfortable and stress free”.

So, whether you’ll be navigating the winding roads of North Wales, the picturesque highlands around Scotland or the landmark-packed routes of Southern England, there are a whole host of road trips to choose between, each offering an experience as unique as the next.

North Coast 500

We start with a route that, if you’re into your cars, you will probably have heard of many times before.

The UK’s answer to America’s Route 66, the North Coast 500 boasts some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, navigating through ancient castles, beautiful beaches and incredibly historical landmarks.

Starting at Inverness Castle and running around the Scottish highlands, driving this route will see you pass through a number of idyllic towns and villages along the way, including Ullapool, Durness, Dornoch and John O’Groats – to name just a few.

What’s more, being the Highlands, there are a whole host of adventurous activities you can enjoy your time doing while you’re there – from mountaineering to climbing to diving.

Plus, if you are really lucky, you may even be able to see the Northern Lights from certain points, since this area of the UK is one of the only places they are visible from outside of Scandinavia.

Snowdonia and North Wales

While on the topic of breath-taking scenery, if you’re a big fan of expansive views and mountainous landscapes, then you’ll love navigating the roads through North Wales and around Snowdonia’s National Park.

Starting at Betws-y-Coed and heading west past Swallow Falls, this will take you into the heart of Snowdonia, seeing you navigate a number of winding roads surrounded by the awe-inspiring mountain itself, which you can get out and climb should you so wish.

Away from the park though, taking a road trip around North Wales will see you travel through a variety of stunning towns, villages and landmarks, including Caernarfon and Anglesey – both of which are well worth stopping at and visiting.

Plus, if you’re looking to make it more of a beach adventure, the sandy dunes and golf course at Harlech are a must-do, offering a wide variety of water sports options to choose between as well.

The Lake District

If you are looking for a route that encapsulates the very best of being British, the Lake District offers some of England’s most picturesque roads and historical affiliations.

The home of the famous poet William Wordsworth, you will start your road trip in Kendal before heading north towards Windermere and into the Lake District National Park. From here, you will then head to the stunning lakeside villages of Ambleside and Grasmere where you will be able to hire a boat or join a cruise to soak in the views.

Then, if you want to find out about another of the UK’s greatest writers, a quick detour to Near Sawry will take you to Beatrix Potter’s Farm where you can discover the inspiration behind titular characters like Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and many more.

So, there you have it – three of the best UK-based road trips to enjoy your post-pandemic freedom with.

However, if none of those listed above particularly take your fancy, the UK is jam-packed with a wide variety of alternative road trips and staycation destinations
