North America: Different Types of Holidays on Offer

North America is a very popular place to Visit. The landscape is so diverse that it can cater for any type of activity – in the US alone you can surf or ski, hike the wilderness or wrap yourself in the bright lights of the city. With all of this in one country, it’s no wonder that US citizens embark on 2.29 billion domestic vacations each year. And they’re joined by almost 80 million international visitors from Mexico, Canada, the UK, Japan, China, and more.

But it’s not just the US which is drawing in the crowds; interest in travel to Mexico, Canada and the Bahamas is also growing. With so much to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start, so he’s a quick and handy guide to some of the best things to do in North America.

Turn Up the Heat

If it’s a sun-drenched vacation you’re after, you’re going to be spoiled for choice. Mexico is the top destination for many Americans and Canadians as it’s a tropical paradise right on their doorstep, but international tourists willing to put up with the long haul flights will find the country is well worth the wait.

Riviera Maya

With acres of lush, deciduous rainforest bordering the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and it’s clear, sandy beaches, the Riviera Maya is many people’s idea of Paradise. A lot of the activities now are based around eco-tourism – helping visitors to understand how to preserve the land rather than wrecking it. You can also take guided tours around the historic Mayan settlements and landmarks like Chichen Itza and Tulum.

Florida Keys

If you want the tropical climate without disappearing into the jungle, then head to the ever-popular Florida Keys. Surf, snorkel, and swim to your heart’s content on the soft, white beaches, and when you’re done you can head into nearby Miami and take advantage of the many retail, dining, and entertainment options on offer. You can even rent a boat from Borrowaboat.com and take to the seas for a day, finding yourself a spot to swim away from the crowded beaches.

Focus on History

The US packs a lot of history into its short existence and much of it is available to visit. Tour the sweeping antebellum plantations of Louisiana, visit the Alamo in Texas, or test your nerves in the haunted corridors of Alcatraz. Even just walking through the streets of the old cities, you’ll find yourself surrounded by period architecture with its own story to tell.

Washington

Of course, the capitol city itself holds some of the most famous historical landmarks, monuments and museums, and is a must-see for anyone interested in the US’s rich history. You can tour the Capitol building itself, home of the US Congress, and a glorious example of Greek-inspired architecture. Take in a show at Ford’s Theatre, the venue of Lincoln’s assassination and still operating today, and visit its in-house museum. Talking of museums, there are plenty in Washington to keep you busy, including the National Museum of the American Indian.

New York

NYC isn’t just all about the shopping. As the first port of call for most ships arriving from Europe, the city has a long history with immigration, and you can visit Ellis Island Museum to see what the journey would have been like for the 12 million arrivals who were processed there. Visit the American Family Immigration History Centre and see if you can trace your own ancestors. Don’t forget to take a trip to the Statue of Liberty and see the famous sight that welcomed the boats as they entered the harbour.

Somewhere to Chill

If your idea of a perfect vacation involves temperatures on the other end of the scale, then North America has plenty of places to cater for you. Although you can find great skiing locations all over the country, the best places to head for great winter scenery, sports, and activities are in Canada.

British Columbia and Alberta

Nestled on the western side of Canada, these provinces straddle the breath-taking Rocky Mountains, providing the perfect backdrop for a winter vacation. For a more family-friendly break, head to Fernie resort, while if you want to conquer the Big Three peaks, go for the popular resort of Banff instead. Whistler is the best place for après ski activities, where you can find live music and entertainment well into the night.

Fairbanks, Alaska

You can’t discuss winter vacations without mentioning the Northern Lights. This spectacle is best viewed from Fairbanks in Alaska, and there are plenty of yours dedicated to taking you to one of the top viewing spots. The trick is to head away from town where the light pollution won’t obscure the sky. Chena Hot Springs is a great visit in itself, but at night it’s also one of the best places to see the Aurora Borealis light up the night sky. Don’t forget to take your camera!

Conclusion

Travelling to North America gives you so many opportunities, whatever the season, to explore and experience the wonderful landscapes and cultures of the different countries. Whether it’s in the provincial French towns of Canada, the bustling metropolises of the US, or the untamed jungles of Mexico, you’ll make wonderful memories to cherish forever.
