Haytor is the name given to the granite peak at the top of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Visiting Haytor on a sunny summers day or even a crisp winters day is a rewarding experience for the whole family. Lots of people venture to Haytor on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as well. It is one of Dartmoor’s busier places and it’s easy to see why. What with miraculous views and wild Dartmoor ponies, Haytor is one of my favourite spots.
Where is Haytor?
Set in Dartmoor National Park, Haytor is easily accessible from Bovey Tracey and is only a 20 minute drive from Newton Abbot. However, just 35 minutes from Paignton and 40 minutes from Plymouth, if you’re anywhere along the South Devon coast then visiting Haytor won’t be too difficult.
History of Haytor
There seems to be no reason in particular that Haytor is as popular as it is. It’s not of any great historic importance, but it is a remarkable feature of the landscape. Haytor has also been used as a filming location. Look out for it in the 1953 version of Knights of the Round Table.
Walks at Haytor
There is a 6 mile circular walk which incorporates the Haytor Rocks, as well as other nearby viewpoints, a wooded section called Yarner Woods and a section of the Templer Way. Terrain is pretty easy going so the walk should be easily manageable by even an inexperienced walker.
Like many National Parks, Dartmoor is filled with wildlife. So make sure to look out for buzzards, sparrow hawks and nightjars whilst you’re walking. And of course the famous Dartmoor ponies! Amongst the flora and fauna the ponies are an iconic sight!

If you’re visiting Haytor and after some refreshments then why not head to the Rock Inn? With rooms available too this is a great place to position yourself if you’re looking to do some exploring of Dartmoor. The Rock Inn sells good food and service is great too. So you won’t be disappointed.

Is Haytor Dog Friendly?
Haytor is a very popular spot with dog walkers. With so much open space this is a great location to let your dog off the lead. The Rock Inn and The Moorland Hotel are both dog friendly as well.
Top Tip For Visiting Haytor
Dartmoor is well known for changeable weather conditions so make sure you pack to suit every eventuality. This is Britain after all!
