Narayan Ashram Dharchula: Your Gateway to Adi Kailash

Narayan Ashram Dharchula: Your Gateway to Adi Kailash

Narayan Ashram Dharchula is nestled deep within the Deodar forests of the northeastern Kumaon region in Uttarakhand and is a hidden gem for seekers of peace, spirituality, and natural beauty. Established in 1936 by Narayan Swami, this spiritual and socio-educational center offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our journey to Narayan Ashram during the Kailash Mansarovar yatra in June 2022 was an unforgettable experience that we are eager to share.

Getting There:

To reach Narayan Ashram Dharchula, we hired taxis from Dharchula, and it took us approximately 2 hours to cover the 23-kilometer journey. The road leading to the ashram was bumpy, narrow, and unpaved for a significant part of the trip, so mental preparation is key. As you approach the ashram, the road improves, offering some relief. However, despite the challenging drive, the breathtaking views along the way make it all worthwhile.

Accommodation:

Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the ashram’s manager, Mr. Rana, and greeted with tea and biscuits. The ashram offers dormitory-style accommodations with shared toilets. While our stay was limited to one night, we recommend staying for at least two days to fully explore the nearby villages and trekking opportunities.

Narayan Ashram Dharchula comprises four distinct buildings and a separate Gaushala (Cattle Shelter). In one of the buildings, a prominent feature is the statue of Lord Surya Narayan, situated on the first floor at the heart of the ashram. The architecture is characterized by stone structures, with the interior adorned with wooden panels that provide insulation against the cold during rainy and winter seasons.

Cost and Booking:

Visitors should make prior bookings as the ashram has limited accommodations and the narrow, landslide-prone roads can be challenging. The ashram charges $12 per person, which includes stay and all meals. Given the fantastic environment and the unique experiences it offers, this is a reasonable price.

Climate:

Narayan Ashram Dharchula experiences cold weather throughout the year, and during the winter season, it remains closed due to heavy snowfall. Summer temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius, while winter temperatures can drop to -5/10 degrees Celsius, with ice forming on the campus.

Conclusion:

Narayan Ashram Dharchula is a hidden paradise for those seeking tranquility, spiritual enrichment, and a deep connection with nature.
