Spring break season is coming up fast and if you’re a college student on a budget who wants to have fun on a tropical beach, you’re probably hoping to find a cheap surf camp in Costa Rica. Well, look no further! At Iguana Surf, we have the ultimate week-long package for a fun, yet budget-friendly, spring break in Costa Rica. Read more for all the other budget-friendly things you can do in the party town of Tamarindo Costa Rica.

Surf Camp

Our ultimate surf camp package is on special for the months of March and April, specifically with spring breakers in mind. Starting at only USD 849, you get seven nights in our beachfront hotel in our cool, comfortable shared dorms. And this ain’t no crowded, dusty hostel! Our boutique hotel is clean and fresh, with air conditioning to keep you cool. There are eight comfortable bunks in a loft-style suite, each with its own locker. There are two full bathrooms downstairs so that early bird doesn’t disturb your slumber if you’ve had a late night.

Your surf package comes with:

  • Round-trip airport transportation
  • Five surf lessons
  • One surf trip to another beach
  • Rashguard
  • Free surfboard rentals
  • Daily breakfast.
  • Video analysis to help you with your skills and a professional photo shoot out on the waves for your ‘gram.

The ultimate surf camp package also includes discounts on all our trips and tours, including an ATV tour of nearby beaches, a sunset catamaran cruise to a secluded beach with an open bar (and nothing says spring break like an open bar!), and more.

Check out our discounted trips and Tamarindo tours HERE.

As you can see, our seven-night surf camp package will only cost you about $120 a day – that includes accommodation, one free meal daily, daily surf lessons, unlimited board rentals, a free trip, free rashie, and a photo shoot!

The savings don’t end there! If you come with your friends, you’ll save even more. Bring a friend and receive 25 percent off. Bring two friends and get 40 percent off! These savings are for those who choose to share a private room with their friends over the shared dorm. Talk about a cheap surf camp in Costa Rica!

There are other ways to save a buck when you’re not busy surfing or off on one of our discounted tours. Check out these budget-friendly options for your spring break in Costa Rica:

Hit the Beach

Iguana Surf is located right across the street from the beach – it doesn’t get any closer than that! So, you have easy access to free entertainment daily. Besides the obvious swimming, sunbathing, and surfing, it can be fun just people-watching on Tamarindo Beach. There are tourists from all walks of life, local ticos, and surfers out on the waves. You can spend hours just hanging out on the beach watching everything that is going on. And you don’t even have to get up to find a drink! There will be vendors coming along selling food and cold drinks, including cold coconuts with rum mixed right in!

Be sure to bring your sunscreen and a hat! The average daytime high during March and April is 33 degrees Celsius (91 F).

The free entertainment lasts all day at Tamarindo Beach. Everyone will gather at dusk for the majesty of sunset at the beach, which takes place between 5:30 and 6:30 pm every day. Not only can you enjoy the beauty of watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean, but there is often entertainment to be found. Whether it be fire dancers, live music, or catching a friendly game of barefoot soccer (futbol), there is always something going on at Tamarindo Beach.

With all that surfing and partying you’ll be doing you can give your stiff muscles a good stretch with some beach yoga in front of the El Be! Club. Classes are held at 8 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and at 8:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes are donation-based ($5-$10) and the teacher always has extra mats available.

Local Eats

Being centrally located, there are dozens of restaurants and food options within walking distance of Iguana Surf. If you want to save money on food, eat as the locals do! Sodas are local-style restaurants that offer Costa Rican cuisine. We recommend Soda el Estero, which is a buffet-style soda with cheap but amazingly good food. If you’re really looking to save a buck and eat like the locals, there is a red food truck near the main road intersection before the rotunda that is popular with the local surfing crowd.

For those that want to save money by cooking their own meals, we also offer an outdoor shared kitchen for our guests and there is a small grocery store right below the hotel.

Wander the Markets

There are two local markets, or ferias, in Tamarindo each week. Both have vendors selling everything from handmade trinkets to herbal tinctures. The Saturday Market is held from 8 am to 2 pm near the downtown skate park. The Tamarindo Night Market is a funky place to hang out with food, drinks, and interesting live performances that make for a fun night. The night market runs from 6 to 9 pm every Thursday at Plaza Palmas and is free to enter and enjoy.

Getting Around

Staying at Iguana Surf means you don’t have to worry about renting a car because we are located on the main road in Tamarindo, near all the restaurants, bars, grocery stores, shops, and the beach. Also any tours you book with us will have you picked up by a shuttle at the hotel. It couldn’t be easier!

If you do want to get out and explore the nearby towns and beaches, it is pretty easy and inexpensive. You can hop on a public bus right in front of the Iguana Surf Shop (the green bus) for less than $1 or pay a little more and grab a “colectivo” (private taxi) for $2 to $3 each way. Don’t worry! We will help you figure it out. Someone is always available to answer your questions.

There are also several places where you can rent a bicycle in Tamarindo for $10 to $15 a day.

Hit the Clubs

Start your night out right with several happy hour promotions at the local bars. The beach bars by Iguana Surf always have great sunset beer promotions. If you’re looking for a refreshment a little earlier in the day, check out Wild Panda for their all-day 2-for-1 cocktails. Just look for the sign that says “Suck My Cocktails”.

El Vaquero is a popular beach bar to watch the sunset and catch a free show. The bar often has live music from 4 to 7 pm along with happy hour food and drink specials. This is a popular place for the beach performers to hold their nightly fire show, which takes place after sunset around 7 pm.

You can find a drink deal every night of the week at Sharky’s Sports Bar, a popular tourist spot. You can even catch a game of beer pong.

Friday nights are for the Crazy Monkey Bar, where you can catch live performances like aerial dancing and DJs spinning for a small cover charge. It is definitely worth it! You can find the classic nightclub experience at Pacifico. This is where everyone ends up on a Saturday night. The women can find drink deals on Wednesdays with ladies’ night specials.

Did we mention that a free pub crawl is being offered to our spring break guests who book the seven-night package?

Since the Iguana Surf Camp is centrally located, you can walk to all the restaurants and bars and safely walk back home each night. Remember, our crew is always here to make sure you know where you’re going, how you’re getting there, and how you’re getting back safe and sound.
