Christmas in Lapland – part III

Our prediction for Sunday was spot on and the gondola and Slopes were open.

Last day skiing

On Sunday we got to explore a few more slopes we could reach with the gondola. The visibility at the top was not the best but the slopes were in great condition and skiing was super fun. Once again when it got a bit too chilly, we headed to a Restaurant on the slopes to warm up. This time we opted for Aurinkoravintola where we had hot chocolate and shared a donut. After being warmed up and fortified we hit the slopes again. The lift lines started to grow as there were clearly more people than in the days before. We got a few more runs in and then decided it was time to pack up and call it a day.

Dinner at Aakenus

The night before I had booked a table for us at Aakenus Grill restaurant. We both decided to only have a main. I kicked off with a Kir Royal-style drink of prosecco and cloudberry liqueur and hubby opted for a beer with the food as he was driving us back to our apartment after Dinner. I selected garlic chicken for dinner with garlic potatoes and hubby had grilled beef with fries. The food was tasty and nicely cooked. This was a nice final dinner to round off our holiday. Once back at the apartment we did some packing as we had to check out by ten the next morning.

Final day

The next morning we finished packing and checked out. Then we had around 8 hours to kill before we had to be at the train station to load our car. We headed out to Aurinkotupa to see some reindeer and had some tea and coffee at the café. Next, we stopped at a look-out point to take some pictures. Then we took sites for Yllästunturi Visitor Centre Kellokas where we checked out the exhibitions and a Northern Lights movie. The center was well worth a visit and the exhibition and film were interesting. Then we explored the shops in Äkäslompolo and looked for a place to have lunch. We ended up at restaurant Otso. I had deep-fried vendace with mashed potatoes and hubby had a reindeer pot pie with sauteed reindeer and vegetables braised in black pepper cheese and cream. The food was okay but nothing to write home about and the mash was actually cold which was disappointing. We made a few more stops on our way to the train station to buy some snacks for the journey and to charge our car.

Back on the train

Eventually, we got the car loaded on the train and got into our cabin. This one had a private bathroom which felt like a luxury. I had some snacks in the cabin for dinner and hubby ate at the restaurant car. I again ordered breakfast to our cabin for the next morning as it had proven a working concept. On Tuesday we were back in Helsinki and got home to Espoo around 11 am.

Heading home

We had a super relaxing Christmas vacation, and I was thrilled to be back on the slopes. Let’s see what our next adventure will be, there is nothing in the cards at the moment.
