Tip 26: Use VPN when using public WiFi

Tags: wifi risk network

When traveling I utilize public Wifi a lot. I’m sure everyone is aware of the risks connected with using public WiFis. Some of the risks related to free public WiFi include data theft, malware attacks, and malicious hotspots. Another potential vulnerability of free public WiFi networks is the lack of encryption, which heightens the risk of sensitive data being stolen. There are some precautions you can take to make your browsing safer.

Naturally, you should turn off sharing anytime you use public WiFi. Also turn off auto-connect so that your device doesn’t automatically connect to a network without your approval. To me, the main tool is a VPN service. The VPN will encrypt all your data, making it extremely challenging for hackers to decrypt your data even if they successfully attack the network. There are several VPN service providers so just take your pick and start using it anytime you log into a public WiFi. My choice is ExpressVPN, which is always included in lists of the best VPN services on offer. Other services that are always mentioned on top lists are Surfshark, NordVPN, CyberGhost and IPVanish.
