Tip 24: Leave some leeway in your budget

We’re lucky enough not to really have to Budget our trips apart from the amount of cash we’ll bring. I’m, however aware of the fact that for many people travel is only possible if they budget. Even though we don’t really budget we’re still aware of how much we spend while traveling.

If you make a budget for your trip, I strongly recommend that you leave some Leeway in your budget. I think there are a couple of reasons to not budget too tightly. Firstly, an emergency can always occur where you need to spend money on e.g. medical costs. Even with travel insurance, you may have to pay something out of pocket and get reimbursed later. Secondly, you may run into something you really want to do and not being able to do it because it doesn’t fit in your budget would be a bummer.

Having some leeway in your travel budget leaves room for surprises, whether positive or negative. This way you won’t be stranded in a foreign country without funds to either enjoy yourself or get out of a jam.
