Tip 16: Use HERE WeGo for offline navigation

The digital era has made orientation in new places much easier, just use your phone to navigate and most times you’ll find your way. While traveling Navigation can be more challenging due to roaming fees. Luckily you can use Offline Navigation. Several map apps offer offline navigation, but my absolute favorite is HERE WeGo, where you can download offline maps of more than 100 countries. Sometimes I also use Google Maps, where you can download the area of your interest and save it to your device or SD card.

The key is to remember to download the maps you’ll need beforehand. I recommend downloading the maps for the entire area you’ll be visiting already at home. I also like to enter at least some addresses as destinations already beforehand, such as where I’m staying and the location of any activities or reservations I’ve made in advance. Then I add new addresses as needed while online, e.g. at my hotel. You can also add addresses while offline but while online you can be sure the app finds them. Remember to switch the app to offline mode. Click the burger navigation menu in the upper left corner and select “Use app offline”.

The HERE WeGo offline maps include directions, public transportation ticket prices, car-sharing prices, and train and bus timetables. When you enter your route, the app will compare car, bike, pedestrian, taxi, and public transportation routes in order to find the fastest and most cost-effective way for you to make your journey.
