Best time to visit Serengeti

The best time of year to visit Serengeti National Park

Serengeti is a dream destination for wildlife enthusiasts and it’s one of the best wildlife reserves in Africa. What awaits visitors is a wonderful and pristine landscape with skies invariably clear and blue (except in April and May when it rains). It’s a place so vast you are rarely bothered by other tourists. But when is the best time to visit Serengeti national park?

– Excellent      – Good      : Fair

The best time to visit Serengeti national park is in the Dry season, from late May to October. During the Serengeti dry season, temperatures are usually moderate and pleasant at around 27-32 °C, with most days having a fine clear sky and the nights getting colder with an average temperature of around 13-16 °C.

The vegetation is sparse and water levels are low due to the lack of rain, meaning visitors will have a better chance of spotting animals.

The dry season is generally the best time of the year to visit all other Tanzania national parks,  when the vegetation is thinner and weather a bit cooler in most parts of the country.

The Serengeti wet season runs from the month of November to May with less rainy in January and February.

Generally considered a year-round destination, the Serengeti National Park has two distinct seasons – The Dry and Wet Season, and choosing the best time to visit Serengeti depends on what you want to experience.

Visiting Serengeti from Late May to October: Dry season

The Serengeti dry season offers ample opportunity to spot animals. Rainfall is scarce and the dry grasslands trampled by vast herds of antelope, elephant, and buffalo, driven by an urgent need for nourishment and water, animals will congregate around the little water source found in the park.

The best time to see the great migration in the Serengeti is from the months of November to May. The months of June and July are the best months to see the wildebeest migration in the western corridor, and August to September in the north of the Serengeti national park.

During the dry season, Mosquitoes won’t be as much of a nuisance during the day, and chances of getting malaria are minimal.

However, the dry season is also the peak tourism season in the Serengeti national park and it gets quite crowded around the central Serengeti – Seronera area. The Morning and nights can also get cold so it’s recommended to have some warm clothing.

Visiting Serengeti from November to May: Wet season

The Serengeti’s wet season runs from November to May with the months of January and February receiving less rain but also offering the best time to see the wildebeest calving, this is an excellent time to see predator action too.

The park’s landscape will be beautiful to photograph during this time; the scenery is lush and green too.

With the presence of migratory birds during the wet season, bird watching is at its best and even though spotting wildlife is easier in the dry season, the Serengeti national park offers good wildlife viewing all year round.
