Purnululu National Park

The Bungle Bungle range is located in Purnululu National Park, or Bungle Bungles as they’re commonly known, which was established in 1987. Situated around 300 kilometres from Kununurra, with May to September being the best time to visit, the access road from the highway is closed during the wet season. The Bungle Bungle range began to get international attention in 1983 when a visiting film crew came across the spectacle.  In 2003, Purnululu National Park was listed as a World Heritage Area.

Unique appearance

There’s no chance of you missing the Bungle Bungles thanks to their distinctive appearance. The massive, beehive-like structures are made up of striped layers featuring different shades of orange, black and grey. The towers are made of sandstone and conglomerates and the individual layers of the sandstone are different colours due to the differences in the sandstone. Some layers are orange due to iron deposits, while the grey and black layers are due to algae. Incredibly, the layers of the towers can change colour following rain. Visitors spend hours walking around the maze of towers which make up the Bungle Bungles and it truly offers a unique experience. For a completely different perspective, you can also opt for a scenic flight over the range.

History of the Bungle Bungles

The Bungle Bungle range dates back 360 million years when it was formed by sand and gravel deposits during the Devonian period. Over time, the sand and gravel compacted and formed limestone. The Bungle Bungles continued to form over the next 60 million and it’s incredible to imagine that the landscape was once flat. Over millions of years, the sandstone has eroded away from wind and rain to reveal the distinctive towers of the Bungle Bungles. Although the area only received widespread attention in 1983, it has been culturally significant for the traditional Aboriginal land owners for thousands of years.
