Safari Kenya in Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara is one of the most famous National parks in Africa. It is located in the Southwest of Kenya and is composed of 1000 square miles. Every year the Masai Mara National Reserve draws hundreds of tourists who want to spot some amazing wildlife during a Safari in Kenya. Especially the yearly wildlife trek from the Kenyan National park to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a spectacular sight to witness. A lot of people, therefore, like combining a Safari from Kenya and Tanzania and follow the great trek. The start of this safari is usually on Kenya’s capital city’s airport; Nairobi.

How to Book your Safari in Kenya

Frankly, there are basically two ways of booking your Kenyan Safari. You can either travel to Nairobi and arrange things from there. Of course, this will take some extra effort from your side. You have to be careful you don’t get overcharged on prices or even conned. Another perhaps more secure way of booking your safari in advance in the country of your residence. So for example, if you are from Belgium you could book your Safari including flights, hotels, and everything else through a Belgian agency such as www.wonisafaris.be. If you choose this option, you do not have to worry about a thing. Of course, you do pay a small fee in this case to the company that has organized your travel for you.

How to get from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?

The Masai Mara is named after two famous things in the region. First of all the Masai which is a very famous group of people who live on the borders of Kenya and Tanzania. They are famous for having a culture that seems ancient and “authentic” touched little by today’s globalization. The second is the name of the river that flows through the national park. If you decide not to book a complete package safari, but arrange it in Kenya, you need to know how to get from Nairobi to the Masai Mara wildlife park.

Traveling to the Kenyan Safaripark by car.

The distance from the heart of Kenya’s national park from Nairobi is only 200 miles. Keep in mind that by car this is still a 6-hour journey in Kenya. The drive will offer you a few amazing sights, but since the roads are not too great also keep in mind it will be a bumpy ride for at least half of the journey and this can literally get a little bit discomforting for your bum

Flying to Masai Mara

The only other option you have really that offers more comfort than a car is a small plane. Of course, you will most likely not able to drive this vehicle yourself and it will also be a bit more costly. The flight time, however, is less than 1 hour. When you choose to go for the flight option you have to fly from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) or Wilson Airport (WIL). You can find the most suitable flight for you easily on Skyscanner. A return costs between USD 300-400.

How much does a Safari to the Masai Mara Cost?

How much you will spend on your safari depends on the time of your stay. There are not too many budget lodges available in the Masai Mara. The entrance to the park is USD 80 per day. Fortunately, this money is spent on wildlife conservation. A night in a lodge is not cheap. Prices usually range from USD 200-300 per night.

Of course, you might prefer a guided tour in between all this wildlife rather than traveling alone. The budget option would be to camp in a tent and tour with a group. A 3-day tour starts from around USD 300. Mid-range tours which consists of private tours and stays in a lodge are usually double the price of a budget stay and cost on average USD 200 per night including the tour. The luxury tours start at USD 450 per night. They differ from the midrange tours mostly by the luxury of the lodges and you might even stay in a luxury hotel. All prices are per person.
