Where is Whitby?
Whitby is a small seaside town located on the North Yorkshire coast, in the North East of England, between Scarborough and Redcar. But it is also rather more than that.
Whitby is isolated from the surrounding major towns due to the protective influence of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the local geography. There are no motorways, dual carriageways, planes or high-speed trains connecting Whitby to anywhere else in the UK – making it the ideal holiday destination if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
But don’t worry, Whitby is far from boring! There’s so much to see and do, with the town having a friendly up beat vibe.
When’s the best time to visit Whitby?
The best time to visit Whitby is between June to September when the weather tends to be warmer and the rain stays away, although this isn’t guaranteed thanks to the unpredictable Great British Weather. Whitby Is busiest during July and August when schools break up for the summer and families descend on this picturesque seafront town.
So my advice if you’re looking for cheaper accommodation and less of a crowd, visit in the months of June and September, when you’re still likely to experience some good weather but don’t have to battle your way through the tiny cobbled streets filled!
Best things to do in Whitby
1. Enjoy the Cleveland Way Coast Path
The Cleveland Way National Trail is a 109 mile walking route through beautiful and ever-changing landscapes and scenery of North Yorkshire, but don’t worry we don’t expect you to walk the whole way! Start off at in Whitby town centre and head south towards Robin Hood’s Bay. This 6.5 mile route takes you along the cliff edge with stunning coastal views and there’s no way of getting lost as you just follow the path until you reach civilisation!
Once you’ve reached Robin Hoods Bay and explored this quirky seafront village you can catch the bus back to Whitby in a swift 20 minutes. Those who want a longer day could make the walk into a circular 13mile round trip by returning along the trackbed of the former Scarborough to Whitby railway, marked as ‘The Cinder Track’ at the entrance to the village. You’ll definitely deserve those fish and chips after burning all those calories that’s for sure!
2. Crabbing in Whitby Harbour
Next to Whitby Bridge is a designated harbour fishing area where 99% of those ‘fishing’ are trying to catch crabs on simple weighted hand-held lines, no hooks needed, the kids love it (adults too)! Most shops sell crab lines and crab meat for a little as £2, meaning you won’t have to break the bank either. You can also watch the boats come and go through the swing bridge as they bring back the catch of the day.
3. Climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey
Take the demanding yet rewarding climb up the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey and enjoy super views over the town. Try and head up during sunset for an insta worthy picture – don’t worry their seats along the way to recharge your batteries! A must do activity in Whitby.
4. Day trip to Robin Hoods Bay
Catch the bus to Robin Hoods Bay, a true gem of the Yorkshire coastline and visit the Old Coastguard station or join one of their famous ghost walks. Why not try and spot the grey seals along the coastal path or explore the marine life in the rockpools, before ending the day with fish and chips of the sea front. There’s plenty to do for all the family.
5. Captain Cook Memorial Museum
Located on the harbourside, this museum is perfect for marine of historic fans. This little museum is well laid out and well worth the money. You’ll found out some great facts and learn a lot more than you anticipate about the adventures of the great Captain Cook. Another bonus is the admission ticket is valid for a whole year so you’ll be able to go back and enjoy it for a second time all for FREE!
6. Whitby Beach
A fantastic beach stretching for miles with flat hard sand making it great for playing games, Whitby beach is one not to miss. Enjoy the walk to Sandsend and stop off at café on route or simply chill and take in the amazing views. Just keep your fingers crossed for sunshine!
7. Spend your pennies in the Whitby Amusements
There’s plenty of amusement arcades to keep the kids happy on your visit to Whitby. The offer the latest video games, fruit machines, traditional slot machines, mini bowling and crazy golf, just remember to bring some change!

There’s plenty of history that lies within the cobbled streets of Whitby and where ever you go you’ll find interesting to see. It also makes for a perfect back drop for pictures. You could spend hours strolling around, window shopping and buying souvenirs at the pop up markets – it’s easy to lose track of time!

Whitby has it all, whether you’re looking for quick cheap eats to keep the kids happy, fish and chips on the seafront (a must), local British cuisine to drool over or hearty pub grub – they’ve got it all.
Ditto
If you’re looking for fresh, well-cooked tasty food, with fast friendly service, you must head to Ditto. I’d recommend the flaked haddock to start, followed by a palate-cleansing ganita, and then the main beef pie plus accompaniments. Splendid. Plus great wine to go along with everything. Just remember you need to book in advance as everyone wants to visit Ditto on their travels to Whitby.
Silver Street Fisheries
This place is fantastic. Friendly staff, but more importantly the food is out of this world. I have been to Whitby many years and this place is always the best fish and chips in town. Why? Always perfectly cooked, fresh fish and tasty gravy for a great price too!
The Windmill Inn
A lovely family feel public house with a great relaxed atmosphere, especially when they light the woof burner. It’s dog friendly for those wanting to bring your fur friends along too! I had gammon steak, chips and a side salad, which was delicious and reasonable priced. Make sure you check out the burgers too. You won’t have any room left for pudding!
