Why did we dine here? – Balthazar is a classic French bistro in New York’s SOHO district. It has been packing them in for over 20 years. We have eaten here for breakfast in the past and decided to try their weekend brunch on our latest trip to the big Apple. Cuisine – French Location – New York SOHO Verdict – Balthazar has an electric atmosphere with the bustling crowd and loud environment. The food took way too long to arrive, service was brusque, but food was decent. We would go back to Bouchon but probably not here. Balthazar Food Picks: Table bread was bordering on stale. Come on, they run a bakery. STEAK FRITES with maître d’ butter or béarnaise sauce ($41) was a good dish. Awesome fries. We ordered it rare and it was definitely very rare. We would get medium rare next time. Avocado and Poached eggs on Toast ($12) with tomato jalapeño salsa would be at home in San Francisco. They can even make it on gluten free bread.
