History of DeWitt County

The first County, DeWitt County (Judicial), was created on February 2nd 1842 and was later declared constitutionally unconstitutional with the other counties with judicial jurisdiction later in that autumn. The current DeWitt County was formed from Goliad, Gonzales, and Victoria counties in 1846. The county was named after the the empresario Green DeWitt.

Demography

At the time of 2000, the 2000 census in 2000, 2013 residents were living in the county, with 7,207 households and 5,131 families lived throughout the town. The density of the population was 22 people per sq mi (8/km ²). The housing units of 8,756 were averaging 10sq miles (4/km ²). The ethnic makeup in the town was 76.4 percent White, 11.0% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 10.0 percent from other races and 1.8 percent from at least two races. Around 27.2 percent of the population comprised Hispanics and Latinos from all races; 28.0 percent had German and 6.1 percentage had American according to|origins, according to|ancestral ancestry, as per} Census 2000. 77.2 percent were able to speak English, 20.5% Spanish and 1.6 percentage spoke Spanish, 20.5% English, and 1.6 percent German as their primary language.

From the households of 7,207, 31.0% had children who were under 18 in the household, 55.1% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder without a husband as well as 28.8 percent were not family-based. About 26.4 percent of households were comprised of people, and 15.0 percent of households had a person living on their own who was or over. The median household size was 2.53 and the median household size of 3.04.

Within the County, the distribution of age was 23.8 percent under 18. 7.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 18.9 percent of those aged 65 and over. It was the average age, 40. In 100 women it was 105.5 males. If 100 women were aged 18 or over it was 105.2 males.

The median household income for the entire county of $28,714, while the median for a family, it was $33,513. Males earned a median of $27,134, compared to the female median of $18,370. The per-capita earnings in the County was $17,780. The county had 15.3 percent of households and 19.6 percent of the population lived under the poverty threshold which included 25.5 percent of the population younger than 18 years old and 16.5 percent of people 65 and over.
