Little India in Singapore – Top things to Do, Places to Eat and Shop at

If you crave tasty food, history, and vibrant culture, then Little India is the place to be. Once famous for its racetracks, cattle herders and brick forges, most Europeans during the 1800s came here. When traders settled in Singapore, they hired Indian labourers to look after cattle. That was the beginning of the Indianization of this district.  

Little India is a mix of Hindu and Chinese culture places with an old-world charm right next to modern shopping avenues, art galleries, and boutique hotels. Look at the things you can do in the district.

Things to Do in Little India Singapore

Temples: The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is the oldest temples in Singapore, devoted to Goddess Kali built in the 19th-century. It was called Soonambu Kambam Kovil i.e. temple at the lime village. The temple has stood the test of time and war, which makes it a must-visit. 

Another temple you must make time for is the Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple built in the late 1800s. The Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple called Temple of Thousand Lights. A mix of Thai, Indian and Chinese this temple was built in 1927.

Other places: One of the last Chinese villas in an Indian district, the House of Tan Teng Niah is known for its rainbow colours. Tan Teng Niah who owned several sweet making factories, built the villa for his wife.

The Indian Heritage Center, inspired by the Indian step wells, is four-storey tall on a narrow lane full of old shop-houses in Little India. You can browse through the permanent exhibit on Indians in Singapore and other displays. Not to forget the district is a hotbed for sumptuous food. Make a note of restaurants you can visit for delicious food.

Little India Singapore Restaurants 

With several restaurants offering fantastic fare, you may be spoilt for choice. But here are some you must make it a point to eat at. The Banana Leaf Apolo that has been offering a hearty Indian meal served on a banana leaf for four decades now. The fish-head curry, chicken masala, biryanis and mutton are a must-try.

Kamala Restaurant outside the Tekka Center is another place to check out. For authentic South Indian food from Tanjore check Komla Vilas -the oldest restaurant in Little India. Khansama Tandoori Restaurant is well-known for both its fantastic ambience and food. 

Kababs and Curries, the rooftop restaurant at the Mustafa Center Mall is a good place to try South and Central Asian food in Singapore. Try eating Mustard for Bengali fare or Jaggi’s for North Indian food. If you are full, maybe you can check out a few places to do a little bit of retail therapy.

Little India Singapore Shopping: When it comes to shopping, the Tekka Market above the MRT station near Bukit Timah Road is the place to be. One of the larger marketplaces it is known for its large wet market that sells fresh seafood, fish and produce. The hawker centre close by is where you can buy colourful Indian things and gorge on tasty food at one of the eateries.

Another must-visit is the Little India Arcade that is a two-storey edifice on a narrow lane between rows of shop-houses from the 1920s. You can find everything from jewellery, silverware, to clothes, handbags, and more.  

Little India’s Serangoon Road is full of jewellery stores, old-style Indian tailors, high-end fashion stores, fresh produce stands, and ancient curry houses. The best time to shop here is morning or evening.  The Mustafa Center is open all day. City Square Mall is an eco-friendly mall that has a large park inside. You can shop at one of the 200 outlets, check out the games arcade, eat or walk around the park.
