Playa Mujeres is a part of Cancun that many people are not yet familiar with. Literally translating to “beach of the women” or “women’s beach” it is not to be confused with Isla Mujeres, the small island located off the coast of Cancun.  

Playa Mujeres beach is a newly developed area located on the mainland, about a 45-minute drive from the airport and north of both the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun and south of Isla Blanca. Many new hotels have been built in this area, which is sometimes called Costa Mujeres as well, and there are many more to come. In fact, the area may end up being home to more hotel rooms than the Hotel Zone.

Until recent years, this area, or more specifically Puerto Juarez just to the south, was only known as being the base for the ferry to Isla Mujeres, while the area to the north where the new hotels are now located was mostly jungle. There is however a Mayan ruins site called El Meco as well, so the Mayans occupied this beautiful area long before developers and tourists did. 

The area is very different from the Hotel Zone, and is surrounded by mangroves and rainforest jungle. The pale blue ocean waters are calmer, since the white sand beach faces the island. You can’t walk along the street in Playa Mujeres and find restaurants, shopping or tour operators, but luckily, Aquaworld’s Playa Mujeres activities are conveniently available right in many Playa Mujeres hotels.

Snorkeling in Playa Mujeres

Snorkeling is one of the best activities to do in Cancun, and Playa Mujeres snorkeling is no different. Aquaworld offers both a snorkeling tour with various stops and a Discover scuba diving tour, which allows you to learn how to scuba dive in one day. Both are available in Playa Mujeres. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest barrier reef system in the world, is located right off the shores of Cancun, so you can expect to see coral reef formations and other marine life like colorful fish, starfish, sea turtles and rays. As we mentioned previously, you don’t have to worry about transportation, because Aquaworld will pick you up at Playa Mujeres beach, right in front of your hotel or very close to it.

Snorkel tour from Playa Mujeres

Aquaworld’s Snorkel tour from Playa Mujeres visits three unforgettable spots, and believe it or not, will not even take up the entire day. After you are picked up by a boat from the beach in front of or near your hotel, the tour begins with snorkeling at the “Meco” site off the coast of Isla Mujeres, where you will see coral formations and schools of different colored fish, then a visit to the island, where you can swim in the calm turquoise water, relax on the beach, Playa Norte (North Beach), and even grab a cold cerveza from a beach bar. The last stop is for more snorkeling, this time at a sunken shrimp boat, which is teaming with fish and other marine life. You’ll be picked up at around 8:30 am and you’ll be back to your hotel in time for lunch, around 12:30 – 1:00 pm. 

This tour includes a life vest (mandatory), mask, a new snorkel tube, fins, water, soda and beer. Children as young as 6 years old may participate. 

Playa Mujeres Scuba diving

Discover Scuba Diving from Playa Mujeres

Discover Scuba Diving is a great scuba diving Playa Mujeres tour because it allows you to learn how to dive and then go scuba diving in the ocean, all in one day! After you learn and practice in the pool, you will dive at Manchones, a shallow reef located off Isla Mujeres, where you will see different types of marine life. This tour is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It’s important to only book this experience if you are staying in one of the following hotels: Excellence Playa Mujeres, Finest Playa Mujeres, Secrets Playa Mujeres, Dreams Playa Mujeres, Atelier and Dreams Vista.  Aquaworld’s instructor to give you a class in your hotel at 11:00 am, then you will dive the same day at 2:00 pm, and return to your hotel around 4:30 – 5:00 pm. 

This tour includes a class both in and out of the water, scuba diving equipment and a one-tank dive. Participants must be at least 10 years old.

Excursions Playa Mujeres

Speed Boat Crossing from Playa Mujeres to Isla Mujeres

Visit the charming tropical island Isla Mujeres. Aquaworld’s Aquatwister, a speedboat that travels up to 90 kph, will get you there in less than less than 30 minutes. Then you’ll have about 4 hours to enjoy the island. Rent a golf cart and explore, head to Playa Norte (North Beach), which has been named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and relax at a beach club and swim in the turquoise blue Caribbean, or shop for Mexican handicrafts and souvenirs downtown. A small boat will pick you up at your hotel and then take you and other guests to the Aquatwister, so it’s important to be ready at your scheduled time, either 10:00 am, 11:00 am or 12:00 pm. The Speed Boat Crossing is available Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. (your return ride departs from the island five hours later).

This tour includes pick-up from your hotel, a life jacket (mandatory) and an 18-minute ride to Isla Mujeres. Children as young as 3 years old may ride.

Waverunners from Playa Mujeres

Got the need for speed? There is nothing like renting a waverunner and flying across the turquoise water with the sun on your shoulders and the wind in your hair. Up to two people can share the Yamaha 110HP waverunner and you can rent for 30 or 60 minutes (It goes by so quickly!). After receiving instructions and a life jacket you’ll be off on your wild water adventure. Aquaworld’s professional staff will keep an eye on your and let you know when your time is up. A special license is not required to operate the waverunner, which is available daily. 

This tour includes a guide, instructions, a life jacket (mandatory) and a waverunner ride. Children as young as 5 years old may ride and the driver must be at least 16 years old.

Skyrider from Playa Mujeres

If you have never parasailed, it’s time to cross this can’t miss adventure off your bucket list. With Aquaworld’s Skyrider you will take a breathtaking flight and see Cancun, Isla Mujeres and the sparkling Caribbean Sea from above. You might even spot some dolphins! The Skyrider is super comfortable, because it features a reclining seat built for two. When your time is up and the parachute is brought back down, ask for a splash and see what happens. The Skyrider is available daily.
