Corals that you will only find if you practice diving in Cancun

The Mexican Caribbean is characterized by having an excellent natural beauty and Diving in Cancun allows us to know the diversity of corals that nature offers us, but do you really know what they are?

Fan Coral


Its official name is Gorgonacea and they are filter feeders that thanks to their small tentacles “hook” the famous plankton and other small particles, this coral has beautiful colors and a shape that simulates a fan, hence its popular name. This amazing animal is planted on a seabed and grows to several feet tall.

Fire Coral


This yellow, green and brown coral is the most delicate and protects against human contact by causing scratches or irritation to the skin, hence its brand new name, if you practice diving in Cancun you will not see this coral as a common reef formation. This coral is the protagonist in one of the sculptures found in the Cancun Underwater Museum.


The “Burning Man” has broken branches that were taken from the bottom of the sea and you can appreciate it if you experience diving in Cancun.

Staghorn Coral


This is found in shallow reefs and is abundant in the waters of Cancun, its size is controlled thanks to the movements of the waves and underwater sediments. It is one of the corals that grows faster, so if you practice diving in Cancun you will realize the importance for the ecological system and the responsibility that is to maintain these corals and fish hatchlings.


Broken parts of this coral were also used to adorn some sculptures of the Cancun Underwater Museum.

Brain Coral


This beautiful coral is one of the polyps of a colony that forms the head of the coral with a structure very similar to the brain, thanks to this shape it has this name.


They are the hard corals that use their tentacles to catch food at night and protect yourself during the day, you can appreciate this by practicing diving in Cancun It can have a life of up to 900 years and grow to a maximum of 6 feet in height.
