After living in New York City as a kid, I’ve always loved how it can hold so much in one location. It’s my favorite city in the world. I am lucky enough to get to go back fairly often to visit friends and explore the city. After a great weekend, I stayed for a couple of extra days to work remotely. I wandered into several spots that I thought I’d mention, in case you were looking for ideas beyond my two recent posts.
Things to Drink
BlackTail is quickly becoming one of my favorite bars in New York. Depending on where you are in the city, Battery Park can be a bit of a hike, but it’s worth it. I love it’s Cuban vibe and the drinks are incredible. The daiquiri, made with a rum blend, lime, and sugar, hits the spot every visit.

Patent Pending is a sweet, hidden gem in the NoMad part of Manhattan. This speakeasy is hidden behind a coffee shop, literally, you walk in and they open the wall. The drinks are amazing and complex. Both the bar and the menu are inspired by Nikola Tesla who used to live and conduct experiments in the building. I loved that each drink had it’s own illustrated tasting note in the menu. You can see another drink, view of the inside, and more history on my Instagram. The Electrical Healing was Mexican and Scottish gin, pisco, passionfruit, hibiscus, pistachio, and lime.
Things to Do
On March 15, 2019, New York City saw its newest, climbable attraction open to the public. Blending architecture with the great outdoors, The Vessel needs to be on your ‘to do’ list. From the outside it looks intriguing and from the inside, it looks beautiful and a bit daunting to those of us afraid of heights. I got brave and made it to the top but not without my knees feeling a little weak.

When you visit SpyScape, you complete tasks and activities that help identify what kind of spy you should be. In addition to learning about espionage, you also get to work surveillance, dodge laser censors, and complete mental acuity tasks. In the end, I was deemed an “Agent Handler” which I guess is the boss of spies. Not too bad.
Things to Eat
No trip to New York City is complete without a bagel. Best Bagel & Coffee provided the perfect start to a day with an egg and cheese on an everything bagel. The only thing missing was a shot of vitamin C that I found in a fresh squeezed orange juice!
When there’s a line out the door, you know you are in for a treat. This was certainly the case with Los Tacos No. 1 near Times Square. A nopal (grilled cactus) taco and quesadilla, along with fresh corn chips and guacamole made for the perfect lunch. There are also plenty of meat options like steak, chicken, and pork if you are into that!
Growing up, we always went to Lindy’s for a slice of cheesecake after a show. Since its closing in 2017, I’ve been getting my REAL New York-style cheesecake at Junior’s. While it lacks the iconic insulting waiters of Lindy’s, Junior’s cheesecake is a bit better, certainly less dry. The classic strawberry slice is hard to beat but there are many other flavors on their menu to tempt your tastebuds. Cheers!
