Why La Fortuna is the best place for a family holiday?

By Stephanie from The Unknown Enthusiast

La Fortuna, Costa Rica is a fantastic family holiday from the UK due to its beautiful location. There are also family-friendly adventures galore, and it is a relatively inexpensive place to visit. (It’s pricier for Central America, but definitely still cheaper overall.) In fact, it truly has a variety of fun, interesting, and exciting activities for kids of all ages.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

  • Mistico Hanging Bridges
  • Ziplining through the rainforest
  • Soaking in hot springs
  • Visiting waterfalls
  • The El Salto River and rope swing

The Mistico hanging bridges are suspension bridges that are strung across the rainforest canopy. You can walk for several kilometers through the park, and every so often cross one of the high up suspension bridges. Bonus – at the first bridge you get a fantastic view of the Arenal volcano.

There are many adrenaline activities to do in La Fortuna, and ziplining is one of the most classic! Make sure to experience the thrills of sailing through the jungle as you zip between different platforms in the canopy at high speeds!

Moreover, La Fortuna sits in the shadow of the dormant Arenal volcano, and thanks to the geological activity, hot springs abound in La Fortuna. Stay at a hot springs resort, or just buy a day pass and enjoy the warm water and beautiful vegetation for the day.

Then, visit one of the many waterfalls in Costa Rica. Especially, the two beautiful ones near La Fortuna which are the Rio Celeste and the La Fortuna waterfall.

Finally, the El Salto River and rope swing is a free public rope swing set over the El Salto river. It’s a popular area to swing and swim with both visitors and locals alike.

The best places to eat, stay, and time to visit La Fortuna

The best time to visit La Fortuna is during the dry season, which is from mid-December to April. Visiting at the beginning of the rainy season (May-July) isn’t too bad. You’ll get some showers, but visitors do tend to be fewer. Weather is hot and humid year round, with highs from around 23-35°C. Staying at a hot springs resort is a great choice – Los Lagos Hot Springs are a particularly beautiful location. For lunch, check out Soda La Hormiga, and for dinner, don’t miss La Parada.

Why the Dominican Republic is the best place for a family holiday?

By Merry Allison from Virginia Vacation Guide

The Dominican Republic is a popular family destination due to its beautiful sandy beaches and has something to offer everyone. For instance, you can immerse yourself in the rich history of Santo Domingo. It is one of the oldest cities in the Americas.

Punta Cana features big beach resorts. Full of family-friendly amenities such as pools, slides, water parks, miniature golf, beach volleyball, and more. The country also offers warm weather year-round. It is generally more affordable than some other Caribbean destinations.

Saona Island in the south of the Dominican Republic is accessible by boat ride as a day excursion from Punta Cana. El Limon waterfall is located in the northern Samana region of the country. You can visit the waterfall on a picturesque guided horseback riding tour. Once you reach it, you will have the opportunity to swim underneath. This will be a magical experience.

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic

April and May are great months to visit the Dominican Republic because the weather is generally warm and dry. In those months the crowds are smaller than in the peak winter season. Traveling in the spring months also avoids the summer and fall hurricane seasons.

Where should you stay in the Dominican Republic?

In Santo Domingo, the Ciudad Colonial is one of the best areas to stay. You will be close to many historic sites. Likewise in Punta Cana, the Bavaro region is generally a great place to stay with many excellent resorts. One recommendation is RIU Palace. Why Negril in Jamaica is the best place for a family holiday?

By Kaidon from Planes, Trains, and Karcz

Taking holiday in Negril is a popular spot for UK families, who go to taste the brilliant coffee of the Blue Mountain and bask in the glorious hot sun near the dazzlingly blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Almost all vacationers opt for a resort, which typically includes all-inclusive food and drinks, pools, and live entertainment. For those who venture offsite, either by resort-endorsed tours or local transportation, there are many amazing things to do in Jamaica.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Negril area

  • Rick’s Cafe
  • The Caves Restaurant
  • Luminescent Lagoon
  • YS Falls
  • Henry the Boatman

Rick’s Cafe is an absolute must-see. While it’s called a cafe, it has a bit of a club feel to it. Live music is played every night, and the fare is excellent! If you bring a towel, there are a few surfaces to go cliff-diving from. You can watch locals do impressive tricks as they leap into the Caribbean below. Rick’s Cafe is built on the westernmost tip of Jamaica, so plan to be there for the most incredible sunsets over the ocean!

YS Falls can simply be stated as a paradise within paradise. A stunning falls that cascades over tiers of stone, with various pools to swim in. Below, the facilities offer food and have additional pools for swimming in.

Henry the Boatman is an easily-spotted, extremely gregarious soul with his name spray-painted on the side of his boat. While it may appear that his vessel should not be boarded, it runs well and Henry is eager to show you a good time on the water, and for a fraction of the price of most hotels. Snorkel trips, tours through the underground caves, passage to nearby islands, and a hilarious and joyful conversation the whole time you’re with him!

When is the best time to visit Negril?

There are a few schools of thought on when the best time to visit Negril is. On the one hand, wintertime is extremely popular for those who want to get out of their wintery climates in favour of some Vitamin D. This makes winter very busy and more expensive but gives a very much needed reprieve from colder weather in the dead of winter. Instead, try going in the summertime. The heat is easy to manage, given that you are only a few steps away from jumping in any pool or body of water! Hotels and attractions will be less busy, making it easier and more affordable for families to go to.

Right next door, the Jardin des Plantes is an excellent place to let them run around and get some fresh air afterward. Why Elafonisi Beach is the best place for a family holiday?

By Dean and Laynni at Routinely Nomadic

The wonderful pink sand of unique Elafonisi Beach in Crete is quickly becoming one of the top family destinations in Greece. Although the beach itself is over an hour from the main city of Chania along narrow, winding roads, there are many direct flights to Crete from the UK. You could easily leave your house in the morning and be digging your toes into the unusual sand that afternoon.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Elafonisi Beach, Greece

  • Pink sand
  • The shallow protected lagoon
  • Sea turtles
  • Snorkelling
  • Elafonisi Lighthouse

Not all the sand is pink, and it generally looks white from a distance. But the closer you get the pinker it looks, especially when the water laps over it. The shallow lagoon with its warm, calm water is the perfect place for little kids. Meanwhile, bigger kids can head out snorkeling among the many sea turtles that nest in the area. They can also walk to Elafonisi Lighthouse at low tide, located on top of the hill on Elafonisi Island.

Summer (June-September) is the high season on the beaches of Crete. However, the weather is usually very nice by April and it stays warm well into November. Visiting during the shoulder seasons avoids the hottest temperatures and most of the other tourists.

There are two snack shops right on Elafonisi Beach, as well as a few restaurants just up the hill. Elafonisi Resort, overlooking the beach, is a great place to stay. Also, you can just stop in for a meal at their delicious Taverna Kalomirakis.
