Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England, and its parent peak, Snowdon, is the highest mountain in Wales. The mountain is a popular hiking destination, with many trails for walkers to take. It is part of the Southern Fells, which is a hilly area in Cumbria’s Lake District National Park.

The first recorded ascent of Scafell Pike is by none other than the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan fame). Once he reached the peak, he wrote a letter to the woman he was smitten with, Sarah Hutchinson, who was William Wordsworth’s wife’s sister. Surely many others had climbed to the peak before, since it is a fairly easy walkable climb, but Coleridge was the first to write details about it.

The mountain is also known for its igneous rock that it is made of, which dates back to the Ordovician period.

Mountain Range: Southern Fells

Elevation: 3,209 feet / 978 meters
