Story of the place

Verkanni formed herself in 7 aspects which as Andharakanni, Agayakanni, Brahmakanni appeared in rivers. Meenakshi in Madurai, Kamakshi in Kancheepuram and Visalakshi in Kasi. Finally, the seventh form Verkanni appeared in Thiruverkadu. The name Verkanni also derived from vel(spear) indicating her eyes.
