Things to do in Hilo, Hawaii

Hilo, Hawaii is a fabulous place to visit. Not only for its breathtaking scenery but also for the many adventures that you can embark on while you’re there. It’s not every day that you get to witness a lava flow, hike a volcano. Then spend the rest of a relaxing day on a pristine beach watching the sunset. There are also several activities and places to visit that your kids will enjoy as well. These are just a few of the things that there is to do when you’re visiting Hilo, Hawaii on the big island.

Akaka Falls 

Located inside of the Akaka Falls State Park, the Akaka Falls is the most famous waterfall that you will find on the island. It’s an easy .4 mile hike through a beautiful rainforest setting before you gaze upon the 442-foot tall beauty. You can also view the Kahuna Falls on this same hiking trail.

Bike Volcano 

Come join Bike Volcano on one of their bike tours to the summit of Kilauea Volcano, which happens to be one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The guides there are very interesting and knowledgeable. You’ll even have the opportunity to stumble down a lava tube! Just keep in mind that the cave can be a little difficult to navigate in certain places. So you’ll need to be mobile.   

Lyman House Memorial Museum 

The Lyman House Memorial Museum is a natural history museum that has all kinds of artifacts and attractions. These help you better understand the earlier cultures that once lived on the Hawaiian islands. On display, you’ll find weapons, cookware, jewelry, and ancient tools. The Lyman House located next door is the oldest wood-frame building that is still standing on the island.    

Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens 

Who wouldn’t want to be able to say that they took their family to visit the only zoo in the United States that is located within a rainforest? The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens is certainly more than just your average zoo. For starters, it has an amazing botanical garden of tropical and exotic plants that you’ll find fascinating. You’ll also spot endangered Hawaiian animals. As well as some of your favorites like giant tortoises, spider monkeys, ring-tailed lemurs, and white Bengal tigers.

One of the best ways to witness the beauty of some of the remotely hidden gems of Hawaii is by air.  Paradise Helicopters offers you several different amazing tours that you can choose from while you’re on the Big Island.
