Searching for Gold in the hills of Wales
Another adventure with the kids taking them on a historical journey into what is possibly the oldest Gold mine in the UK, and the only Roman goldmine that the national trust has among its many sites.
Dating back from before the Romans arrival in Britain this historical site is full of fascinating facts about early gold mining
With plenty of information signs around the area, the kids were able to learn about the history all around them in a fun environment that had many different
You’ll find the goldmine in the Dolaucothi Estate which is not far from the Brecon Beacons national park and close to the village of Pumsaint, as well as the mine there are over 25km of walking tracks
The kids loved panning for gold but with the water being freezing I was surprised at how long they kept searching for the tiny specs of gold, I think that they had gold fever, after a quick warmup they were off again exploring the different displays while we waited for our timeslot to go on the mine tour.
This was our favourite part of the visit, and it gave the kids a chance to feel like Indiana Jones exploring the dark tunnels with the rocks all around them glistening from the fungus on the walls that has only been found in two mines one of which is on the other side of the world. As they looked around, they were able to spot the bats on the walls and ceiling, all the while the tour guide provided interesting information about the workings of the mine.
