Dairy-Land: A Walterboro, SC Icon

Walterboro is an interesting Town replete with history, beauty, architecture, and most importantly…FOOD!

For being a small South Carolina town, there are a lot of great places to eat in Walterboro. Sure, you can find your typical fast food joints, but thankfully, there are a lot of Walterboro only places to grab a bite to eat.

One of those places is Dairy-Land.

Dairy-Land got its start back in 1949.

I was hoping to provide some history, but at this time I’m still doing some digging to find information. I will update this article once I have more to share.

That said, back in October of 2018, Dairy-Land suffered a fire that, for many locals, thought spelled the end of the Walterboro icon. However, the community came together to rescue Dairy-Land and ensure that it remained open for many more years to come. More on that story can be found HERE.

The restaurant is a little drive in / walkup style restaurant situated a couple miles off of I-95 in the heart of Walterboro.

They offer walk-up windows as well as a drive-thru where you can pick up order placed over the phone. They take cash and card alike. There are a couple picnic tables sitting outside where you can eat. When you walk up it feels very much like walking back in time only to be snapped back to the present when you see that they take credit cards and have a modern point of sale.

The menu offers a lot at a reasonable price:

  • Burgers
  • Sandwiches
  • Fried Chicken
  • Grits (very southern)
  • Biscuits
  • Ice Cream
  • Shakes
  • Fries
  • Onion rings
  • Wings
  • Hot Dogs
  • BBQ
  • Chicken Livers & gizzards (very VERY southern)
  • And more…

On my visit, I decided to get a double cheeseburger basket (which included fries):

The burger was HUGE with two slices of cheese, mayo, mustard, ketchup, onion, and tomato (which I opted to NOT have as I’m not a tomato guy except in the form of ketchup).

Seriously, they did not skimp on the beef:

The burger was hot, fresh, juicy, and had a very lovely back-yard barbecue flavor to it. It felt very homemade. Like a warm July 4th night at someones house where the burgers were pulled straight from the grill and placed directly into your mouth. There’s no fluff or fillers in this burger. The patties were all beef, beautifully greasy, and thick.

The fries were crispy, salty, and reminded me slightly of McDonald’s fries (at least in the shape and size), but WAY better. I hate to even compare them to McDonald’s, because that is often not a just comparison. So just know that being reminded of McDonald’s doesn’t mean McDonald’s quality.

The staff were welcoming and kind. Much like you would hope and expect from a small town local joint. And the wait wasn’t that long, especially for a Friday night. I do know that often times this place is hopping. Especially after football games at the local high school. But on my visit there were only a few people ahead of me, and the wait wasn’t long at all. 5 to 10 minutes at most.

One of these days I’ll have to get a milkshake and update the review when I do.

I’ve been to Dariy-Land several times over the last few years, and overall my experience has always been pleasant. The food has always been top-notch. And frankly, I’ve left full, pleased with the food, and genuinely satisfied. Everything you could ask for in a foodie experience.

If you’re ever in Walterboro, or your journey takes you on I-95 by Walterboro, don’t hesitate to make a stop at Dairy-Land to refuel the ol’ belly. I promise, you won’t regret it!
