Visa on arrival Now Limited to 2 instead of 30 days

Recently, there have been changes in the rules regarding visa on arrival overland entry by Thai immigration for border runs. The foreigners coming into Thailand via border posts at Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Malaysia without getting a prior visa will now be granted 30-day visa exemption stamp TWO times per the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31.

This change is applicable only to visitors who have not got a visa beforehand, and are entering from the border by land. Those who arrive at the airport without a prior visa will continue to receive a 30-day stamp up to 6 times per the calendar year. Extensions at Thai Immigration for the visa exemption stamps remain to be 30 days for a fee of 1,900 baht.

The only exception to the new regulation will be Malaysian passport holders travelling from Malaysia, as they will continue to receive the 30-day Unlimited Visa Exemption stamps.

After 90 Days

Visitors can now come recurrently to Thailand without having to restrain their stay within a total of 90 days in a six-month period.

The restriction has already been abolished so tourists can now visit Thailand as often as they want, provided that they obtain 30 days Visa on Arrival at airports and 15 days Visa on Arrival if they are travelling via land borders.

Immigration officials still propose getting visas before arrival in Thailand, as they remind visitors that back-to-back short visas are not the appropriate way to extend the stay in the country on a long-term basis.

This new regulation is highly beneficial for the travel agencies as more border trips are expected to be booked with the increased invasion of tourists eager to refurbish their visas.

If anyone has an extension of stay or simple permit to stay but would like to travel outside Thailand for a short period then you will need to apply for a Re-Entry permit.

You must obtain the re-entry permit before you travel at:

  • Any other local immigration offices
  • Thai Immigration located at Chaengwattana Road, Bangkok
  • International airports such as Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi

When applying for a re-entry permit you should submit the following:

  • The correct fee
  • A completed TM-8 form
  • Colored photo (4cm x 6cm)
  • Photocopy of passport (main page and latest entry stamp)

The current fees for re-entry permits are as follows:

  • 3,800 Baht for multiple
  • 1,000 Baht for single

The fees at the airport are higher than the fees at the local immigration office.

Re-Entry Permits

Re-entry permits can be applied for in person or through an agent at Thai immigration office. A letter of attorney is required if an agent is involved.

The processing time at Thai Immigration offices differs from 1 hour to half a day, so if you want the visa on the same day apply before lunch.

The re-entry permit does not extend your visa or permit to stay, rather it is just a permit to be able to return to Thailand and use the remaining days of your permit to stay or extend the stay. Keep in mind when coming back into Thailand, you must note the re-entry permit number on the Immigration to be safe on the rules.
