| Canary Islands Travel Guide |

The Canary Islands are one of the most popular sun, sand and sea holiday destinations in the world. Many tourists throng this place to cherish and experience the year-round sunshine. But very few are aware that each Island has its own unique feature to appear strikingly different.

The Canary Islands, are rugged volcanic isles known for their black- and white-sand beaches. Tenerife, the largest island, is dominated by the sometimes-snowy active volcano Mt. Teide, which has its own astronomical observatory and is part of Teide National Park. Tenerife hosts a huge pre-Lent Carnival in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The islands’ rich volcanic soils and mild temperatures support a wide variety of vegetation that generally follows a zonal arrangement based on elevation. They yield crops of bananas, oranges, sugarcane, coffee and tobacco. Let us know about each and every island and decide which island to visit and make a stay for own specific pleasures and preferences. It can be used as Canary Islands Travel Guide.

Tenerife Island

It is the largest island with an area of almost 2,034 km and also the most popular tourist destination of the archipelago, with a count of 5.77 million tourists visiting in the year 2016. The island is famous for many museums and monuments that are a rich portrayal of its history, but unfortunately, it suffers under low-cost mass tourism from the European mainland. Though it is half in size of Gran Canaria and also is of volcanic origin, but it is low lying and arid, with a spectacular volcanic landscape in the west of the island preserved as Timanfaya National Park. The island came into being after the breakup of the African and the American continental plates. The capital is Arrecife and has its own airport.

La Palma Island

The island has a total population of about 86k, out of which 18k live in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma and about 20k in Los Llanos de Aridane. The geographic layout of La Palma is a result of the volcanic formation of the island. The southern part of the island is dominated by a volcanic ridge formed by numerous volcanic cones built of lava and scoria known as Cumbre Vieja. The Cumbre Vieja is active but dormant, and the last eruption happened in 1971 at the Teneguia vent, in the southern end of the Cumbre Vieja.

 La Gomera Island

This island is a Magic Isle, and San Sebastian is the capital. Hikers term it as their own paradise. The shape of the island is like an orange which is cut in half and then split into segments. The terrain is rough, which has left deep ravines or barrancos between them. These barrancos, in turn, are covered by the laurisilva. The only remaining Laurisilva rainforest in northern Africa is in La Gomera. The local wine has an amazing taste, and many a time accompanied with a tapa (snack) of local cheese, roasted pork or goat meat. Other popular dishes include almogrote, a cheese spread, and a syrup extracted from palm trees known as Miel de Palma. The local people have a unique way of communicating across deep ravines by using a whistled speech called Silbo Gomero. This whistled language is to the island, and its existence has been identified since Roman times.

El Hierro Island: This island is known as “The edge of the world” and is also known as the Meridian Island, and Valverde is its capital.

La Graciosa Island

The smallest inhabited island of the Canaries in terms of area and population, with only 29 km² in size with a population of approx. 650. Its capital is Caleta de Sebo, which is located a few km to the north of a volcanic ridge formed by numerous volcanic cones built of lava and scoria Lanzarote.

The most striking of the Canary Islands is La Gomera’s wild scenery which can include in one vista a mix of tiny terraces and palm groves, lush rainforest, and hills that look as though they belong in the Atlas Mountains. The island is characterised by plunging ravine after plunging ravine, making getting around it by car, a time-consuming business. Sometimes it’s just as easy to walk. Subsequently, there are few roads but walking trails everywhere, which is why it’s a magnet for hikers from across Europe.

All islands use the same time zone – Western European Time (WET). This means the time is synchronized e.g. with Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Canary Islands Travel Guide: Things to See in Canary Island

Apart from above-given places, there are many more places to visit. We have mentioned the islands above where you can spend your time. Now we have mentioned some exact places where you can visit.

Teide National Park, Tenerife

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes the entire mountain. A trip inside the immense crater is the highlight of the trip to the Canary Islands. Inside the crater’s rim is a caldera – the crater floor – 19 km in diameter, and when we drive across this barren moonscape, it is like driving into the centre of the earth.

El Portillo Visitor Center

It is an excellent little museum having interactive exhibits to show how volcanoes formed and exploring the environment of the crater. Outside, a path leads through a botanic garden, where labels help visitors recognize and identify native plants they are going to see in the park.

Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote

The park has huge areas of unearthly terrain covered in swirls of solidified lava, cracked into crevices by more molten lava still moving beneath it. We can see the entire park from Islote de Hilario, at the top of a volcanic cone, where the park rangers demonstrate the tremendous heat just beneath your feet.

Beaches of Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria on its south coast has some of the most beautiful golden sand beaches. There are six major beach resorts between Playa de San Agustin on the west and Puerto de Mogán to the east. The largest among them is Maspalomas, the island’s most popular beach, painted with bright umbrellas and backed by a promenade and a line of restaurants, cafes, shops, and amusements.
