Ireland East

Ireland East

The Ireland East Itinerary includes lush gardens, intact castles, ancient monasteries and colourful fishing villages. It is mainly inland rather than coastal, more history than scenery. This route is covered in 7 posts and needs 8 days (one post is missing) and is ideal for short trips.

You may want a couple of days before and after this itinerary for Dabbling with Dublin and/or Staying Trim. If you have more than a week, then combine this tour with places we did not have time for. These can be found on the map; such as Inistioge Bridge, Glen of Aherlow, Cork’s English Market, and Waterford to name a few.

1. D-Day in Dublin gives a good example of why you want to stay near the airport for at least a day.

2. Power of Powerscourt 3.5Σ is a beautiful garden, especially in May with the scarlet rhododendrons blooming. It comes with Italianate pebble mosaics and Japanese Gardens The separet but nearby Powerscourt Waterfall is worth a visit.

3. Glorious Glendalough 4Σ is an archaeolgical masterpiece. It comes with excellent Guided Tour Included in the OPW fee. The route returns via the Wicklow Mountains

4. Kilkenny Cousins 3.5Σ explores cathedrals, Tudor-era streets and a castle masterpiece. It does not have a medieval atmosphere. The Kilkenny Castle comes with Excellent Guided Tour included in the OPW fee. The Seafood Chowder across the street is to die for.

5. Shock of Cashel 5Σ is an archaeolgical masterpiece. It comes with excellent guided tour included in the OPW fee. Greats views from the highway and the Hore Abbey ruins, which are worth a look.

6. Kilkenny to Kinsale 3Σ explores Cahir castle, a thatched roof masterpiece, and the oldest stone multi-arched bridge still in use in Europe — over 570 years old!

7. Cloudy Cobh to Kool Kinsale 3Σ offers two fishing villages with brightly painted pubs and restaurants. We enjoyed the Sandy Code drive and Charles Fort as well.

8. Mizen Head — Sheeps Head ?Σ was rained out: post on Dombeg Circle will be issued in the future
