5 Great Podcasts For The Summer Of 2018

When we think about personal tech these days, Podcasts have to be in the conversation. If you own a smartphone, tablet, or even personal computer chances are you’ve discovered the joy of podcasts. Once viewed simply as a sort of modern alternative to AM radio, podcasts have expanded rapidly to cover all kinds of purposes. They educated and inform, they entertain, they distract, and, through all of this, they spark new and interesting topics of discussion between friends, family members, and even strangers.

If you’re just now looking to get into podcasts, or if you’ve got some you like but you’re always looking for more, these are a few you might want to try listening to this Summer.

Stories Of Premchand

This is a popular choice that has been mentioned among the best Indian podcasts to try in 2018. So, while this list does not solely concern podcasts that originated in India, it feels well worth mentioning! As you may know, Munshi Premchand was a famous Hindu writer known for short stories that took a realistic, and occasionally political approach. Some of his stories are related in audio form in this podcast, as narrated by Sameer Goswami. It’s a wonderful introduction to some of India’s greatest literature.

Gamblecast

This is a brand new podcast that was launched this summer, and which is aimed at helping listeners sift through predictions and odds for major sporting events (most notably the summer World Cup, to start with). Promising a listen that’s informative, helpful, and a bit of fun, it certainly sounds like a new must-listen for anyone with an interest in sports. Indeed, even if you aren’t planning on using Gamblecast for its gambling tips, knowing what the oddsmakers are saying can be interesting preparation for an event.

Gita For Daily Living

Building off of Eknath Easwaran’s in-depth commentary on the Bhagavad Gita and how it relates to everyday life, this is a podcast that speaks to general spiritual wellbeing. You don’t have to follow the Gita closely or even be of any particular religious persuasion to appreciate daily lessons like these. They’re relaxing, thought-provoking, and often deeply educational.

Mogul

We’re actually hoping that Mogul becomes a series, and given that it comes from the innovative and always interesting podcasters at Gimlet Media, there may be a chance that winds up happening. In the meantime though it’s great for what it is. Basically it’s a whole show organized as a thorough and dynamic biography for the music producer Chris Lighty. Whether or not you’re interested in some of the major hip-hop artists Lighty worked with (Missy Elliott, 50 Cent, and more), a biography of an interesting figure presented in this format is a very interesting listen. It even has a great hook, describing itself as one man’s story “from the first breakbeat to the last heartbeat.”

TEDTalks Technology

This pretty much speaks for itself. TED Talks are always fascinating, and give us the opportunity to learn about any number of topics directly from informed and experienced experts. Frankly there are a lot of them to choose from. But given our interest in tech, this particular category of talks compiled in a single podcast is a treat.
