Modesty And Islam:

Islam preaches its believers to adopt chastity and modesty in their manners. It is a huge misconception that Islam forcefully asks women to cover themselves and denies them the right to dressing up. In reality, however, Islam gives the absolute authority to women to decide who can look at them. This is the highest degree of freedom when a woman is able to guard herself against ill-intentioned eyes gawking at her.

Islam is such a beautiful religion that pays attention to even the minutest details. With regard to dressing. Islam tells its believers to not to dress ostentatiously. The idea is not to hurt anyone’s feelings who can ill afford expensive clothing. Islam advocates modesty in terms of spending money as well on clothes. You must not dress up to show off to others or make them feel envious.

Nor should your dressing be ragged or unclean. Rather, you should wear nice, clean and reasonably decent clothes. Your dressing must not be such that imitates that of people belonging to other faiths. Islam requires Muslims to maintain their distinctiveness from people belonging to other faiths.

Dress Code For Men In Islam:

Islam advocates modesty in dressing not only to women but to men as well. Men are supposed to cover essentially the body parts between the navel area and the knee at least. Ideally, men should wear loose clothes that cover their body parts from neck to ankle just as the traditional Islamic robe for men. Islam prohibits men from wearing gold and silk. Idea is to let men preserve their masculinity and refrain from things that are basically for women.

Dress Code For Women In Islam:

Islam is very protective of women. No religion gives rights to women as much as Islam does. Islam is totally against the objectification of women or signifying them as sex symbols. Rather Islam teaches Muslims to honor and respect women and guard their dignity and modesty.

Islam requires women to cover all her body parts especially her chest. They must essentially cover their heads. Muslim women are not allowed to show their hair to stranger men. In front of stranger men. They are required to observe the hijab, which means to cover them.

Hijab is not compulsory in front of Mehram, that is all your male relatives such as father, brother, husband, son, grandfather, paternal uncle and maternal uncle. Nevertheless, women are required to dress up decently in front of Mehram as well.

Tight-fitting clothes are strictly prohibited in Islam, especially for women. They must not wear clothes that reveal the shape of their body. Muslims women around the world wear a loose robe, called abaya over their clothes to cover their bodies. Apart from this, a woman’s dress must not be transparent and see-through. It must be thick enough not to make the skin beneath visible.

When in public, women must not wear flashy and flamboyant clothes that attract strangers. A woman must not imitate men in her dressing and styling. She must preserve her femininity. Islam encourages women to dress up, wear jewelry and look beautiful. But she must do all this to please her husband, not to attract stranger men. In this way, her husband would also be attracted to her and most likely remain faithful.

Islam teaches modesty not only through clothing but also through your manners, speech and most importantly your behavior. If women are required to cover themselves, men are strictly required to cover their gaze.

A person must be modest in his appearance as well as in his heart and intention. Such chaste and modest people are rewarded immensely in this world and Hereafter.
