What is Al-Safa and Al-Marwah?

Safa and Marwa are two small hills which are located in the Masjid-Al-Haram; Makkah; Saudi Arabia. The distance between the two hills is 400 km between which pilgrims travel back and forth seven times. It is known as performing “Sa’ee” which takes place to commemorate Bibi Hajrat search for water and in return, Allah answered her prayer.

What Happened In History Between Safa and Marwa?

Let’s take the clock back to the time when Prophet Ibrahim was commanded by Allah to leave his wife and son alone in the desert between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah. So, he left them to a place near the Ka’bah under a tree on the spot of Zamzam.

There was no shed of water at that time to be found near and the Makkah was also isolated. It all started when their provisions ended and they ran out of the water. Bibi Hajra first climbed the nearest hill (Safa) in search of water.

She then climbed the other hill (Marwa). When she went into valley she could hardly see his son and would run whilst in the valley and walk at a normal place on the hilly areas. To make sure Prophet Ismael (A.S) is safe, she traveled back and forth almost seven times between the hills. On her return towards the son, she saw Angel Jibrael hit the ground with his wing.

Where is Zamzam Well Located?

The spot where the Angel dug his heel, water fountain out at that place which is known by Zamzam well. Zamzam well was a pure reward of Hajra’s patience and trust in Allah. She then made her son drink that water as the angel said to her

“Don’t be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects His people’
