Cenote Cristalino Riviera Maya

The Last Guide You'll Ever Need

In the Riviera Maya, there are few things more popular to do during the day than visiting the famous cenotes.

In fact, Cenote Cristalino is one of the most popular cenotes in Playa del Carmen and justifiably so.  Famous for its profound beauty, serene atmosphere and above all its magically translucent blue water, Cristalino is regarded by most as one of the top cenotes in the Riviera Maya.

Interestingly enough, in English, the word Cristalino translates “crystal-clear” and holy smokes, whoever named this lake could not have been more spot-on because this water is almost too perfect to be real.

About Cenote Cristalino

• Cenote Cristalino is an open-type cenote that basically resembles a shallow tropical swimming pool.

• Cenote Cristalino is actually quite large, so even if with a lot of tourists there, it won’t typically feel overcrowded. In fact, Cenote Cristalino is actually made up of several small watering holes interconnected through an assortment of walkways, which allows tourists to explore a bit and find their own space.

• One of the coolest features about this sinkhole is the 20-foot cliff jump located dead smack in the middle of the main lagoon. This is typically the area where most tourists will spend their time in the cenote.

• Located nearby to Cenote Cristalino are Cenote Azul and Cenote Jardin Del Eden, which cohesively make up the perfect cenote day trip if you plan to visit all three.

• Aside from the crystal-clear water and perfect snorkeling conditions, the surrounding lush green foliage of this cenote makes it utterly beautiful no matter which way you look.

Cenote Cristalino Opening Hours

Cenote Cristalino is open every day from 8 am to 5 pm.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Cenote Cristalino?

Typically, the best time to visit Cenote Cristalino is any time during the week either two hours after opening or two hours before it is about to close.   This is when you will find the fewest number of tourists visiting the lake.

The lagoon never becomes as overcrowded as other popular cenotes like Gran Cenote and Cenote Calavera, where they literally warn you upfront upon entering how crowded the cenote is.  However, if you are hoping to visit for the sake of photography when the lake has the least amount of people, then I suggest you visit during these hours.

Cenote Cristalino Entrance Fee

The entrance fee to Cenote Cristalino is 150 Pesos (which is approximately 8 USD) for adults and 100 Pesos for children.

Pro Tip

Although the Cenote Cristalino entrance fee is extremely affordable, if you plan on going Riviera Maya cenote hoping for the day, be sure to bring enough cash with you because these little fees do add up quickly.

Where Is Cenote Cristalino Located?

Cenote Cristalino is located just 20 minutes south from the downtown area of Playa del Carmen and about 30 minutes north of Tulum.

Additionally, Cenote Cristalino is located next to the popular Cenote Azul, so it is very common for people to visit both in one trip.

How To Get To Cenote Cristalino

 Renting A Car

Like getting to most attractions in the Riviera Maya it is best if you drive yourself to Cenote Cristalino.  In order to reach this cenote from Playa del Carmen, you must head south along Highway 307 towards Puerto Aventuras for about 20 minutes.

Renting a car in either, Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum typically cost around $30 USD per day and is the most efficient way of getting around to the long list of Riviera Maya Cenotes.

Take A Collectivo

Taking a collectivo (small public bus or shuttle) is the cheapest way of reaching Cenote Cristalino. These shared vans typically cost around 40 Pesos per person for a one-way ticket.

You can catch the collectivo every 10 minutes from 2nd street in Playa del Carmen. However, be aware that they do stop quite a bit which makes the journey much longer than if you had driven yourself. Along with the fact that they fill them to maximum capacity which oftentimes leaves you standing or sitting on the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Cenotes In Riviera Maya?

Considered to be sacred by the Mayan people, cenotes are natural sinkholes that are created once the ceiling collapses to reveal the underwater system below. In fact, cenotes were considered to be the only source of water for the Mayans, which is why they are indeed so sacred.

Interestingly enough most of the sinkholes on this list are connected to each other through either one of two subterranean water systems called Sac Actun (219 miles long) and Ox Bel Ha (270 miles long).
