7 Lesser-Known Wildlife Sanctuary of Kerala That Can Be Explored

Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

These animals are endemic to this phase of the Western Ghats, which is at an altitude of 50 to 1145 m above the sea level. Established in the year of 1984, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary expands to an area of 55 square kilometres. Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary

Established in the year of 1984, the picturesque region of Chimmini wildlife sanctuary is situated in the Thrissur district. When considering its geographical location, they are the close neighbour of Parambhikulam and Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary. Hence the flora and fauna living in the latter two wild parks can also be sighted in Chimmini. The conserved wildlife region comprises an area of around 85 square kilometres, through which flow the rivers of Mupliam and Kurumali. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

The first-ever bird sanctuary established ever opened in the state of Kerala is the Thattekad bird sanctuary, which is otherwise known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. They are yet another bird sanctuary located in the district of Ernakulam but to its north-eastern regions adjacent to Kothamangalam. At its 25 square kilometres of Evergreen forest, you could find the endemic creatures such as Shrike, Black Winged Kite, sunbird, night heron, jungle fowl, grey hornbill and many others. They are very picturesquely situated on a beautiful shore of the Periyar River. In addition to all these, the wildlife zone also holds the significance of being called the richest habitat of Peninsular India for Bird by the noted ornithologist, Salim Ali.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar is a significant area considering the demographic structure of Kerala, as they are the only rain shadow region.
