Here’s a raw account of my brief stop in Skopje, originally intended for the postcards I unfortunately lost while in transit ☹
Greetings from Skopje! The Statues here are absolutely captivating, echoing the unpopular yet fascinating history of Macedonia. The grand statue of Alexander the Great in the central square pays a genuine tribute to his legacy. It’s massive, screaming for attention. Speaking of attention, the attention to detail is remarkable. It exudes strength and spirit.
Yes, the streets are filled with statues that unfold Macedonia's history, or perhaps a version of it. Talk about issues and controversies. But, sure, each statue shares a unique story, giving insights into different eras and influential figures, and even commoners.
However, there are debates surrounding these statues, the project's historical narrative, and resource allocation. Imagine: there are actually more statues here than there are people (though, unconfirmed😊 ).
But beyond the statues, Skopje offers more treasures. For example, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle reveals the country's courageous fight for independence, while the Old Bazaar showcases its rich Ottoman past. However, I must admit that I found myself drawn to the zoo.
‘Til next time!
