Hiking Checklist 2021

Disclaimer: This post does not intend to advertise or encourage anyone in any way to do things or go places, other than to personally document post mid-pandemic adventures in this free space. This page will be constantly updated for the next few months or weeks as I progress on this personal endeavor.

The last time my Hiking shoes were of actual use was last March 17 2020, the very same day the Philippines was placed under state of calamity due to the spread of novel coronavirus disease. It was for a special climb at Mt. Makiling’s Peak 2, my favorite hiking destination of all seasons for countless reasons. All the more regarded as an unforgettable one because to date, it’s safe to say I am among the last few hikers to reach the summit before the unfortunate turnout of events. Essentially, I was there moments before the mountain’s hibernated. As of date, Mt. Makiling is still in indefinite closure and hiking activities are generally in hiatus with UPLB still off-limits from non-campus residents.

While some mountains are still inaccessible, a few have resumed operations to the delight of mountain fans, hiking enthusiasts, including those pretending to be one. But for whatever reasons we have urging us in doing so, they’re all valid. As for me, my motivation is fueled by the thrill and joy of being mask-less and free, simulating and celebrating old and normal ways of life, in probably one of the safest places at the moment. I am among thousands out there stuck in our own proverbial cells and the news of several trails vastly opening up gradually triggered endorphin release. And while there is a deafening lack of public information regarding the status of mountains – again, for apparent reasons – there are effective ways to do research beyond the classic quick peek at PinoyMountaineer page nowadays. Whether it’s directly coordinating with local guides, checking YouTube, Instagram & other social media platforms, or any other means I am not yet aware of, your own creative and effective methods are your own discretion so long as you don’t actually break any rules against the pandemic protocols.

Mt. Kalisungan, Calauan Laguna | 30 January | Historically, the first tend to be the best. And rightfully so, this mountain was a perfect option for a comeback climb. As the first hike for 2021, this climb speaks volumes – of hope, positivity, and silver linings – that in the height of a global scare hopelessly under a shitty government, we have somehow managed, validated by these extra normal things we can now do beyond our little normal lives. Compared to the 2013 Kalisungan Hike, I would say the mountain has matured seven years after. Not sure if it’s due to the pandemic but the trails are better, entire process is smoother, and guide system was evidently more organized unlike before. Isn’t it the point anyways, for everything and everyone to improve overtime, contrary to the case of Philippine clowns, enablers, and the likes, stunted to their very core?

Mt. Gulugud Baboy, Mabini Batangas | 07 February | My sophomore climb happens to be this second-timehike up this friendly mountain in the neighborhood, from my workplace point of view. Since I started living in Batangas some 3 years ago, I am unwarily adopting the Batangas way of life and more so appreciating every single thing associated to it good or bad, ranging from the famed signature lomi, the infamous Batangueno accent, and even the frequently irritating Batangas traffic, that which is topped by my quest at conquering each and every Batangas mountain, which unfortunately has ultimately halted altogether. With a foreseeable long time stay in this province, I think I’m still in the right pace at achieving such set goal. So, no worries.
