Visiting Liberty State Park

Liberty State Park, located in Jersey City, is one of the most remarkable and historically important state parks not only in New Jersey, but on the east coast. Of course, the park is well known for its spectacular skyline view of New York City and the Hudson River. Liberty State Park, however, has a lot more to offer than just a view of lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge or the Statue of Liberty.

Take the Liberty Walk

The Liberty Walk is a two-mile walkway where locals go for a stroll, jog, biking, or even rollerblading for their daily exercise or leisure. While taking the Liberty Walk, a largescale view of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, lower Manhattan, Jersey City, and even the Brooklyn Bridge will be in front of you.

Get a Ferry Ride to Elis Island and Statue of Liberty

For the New York lovers, a tourist visit won’t be complete without visiting Ellis Island and the State of Liberty. Travelers can purchase tickets and get a ferry ride to both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty from the Liberty State Park. The park is the only location to get a ferry ride to either location.

Tourists, of course, in New York can still reach these historical landmarks by a cruise ship if they don’t have the opportunity to travel to New Jersey to get a ferry ride from Liberty State Park. 

Experience a little history with the CRRNJ Terminal

CRRNJ, the Central Railroad of New Jersey, Terminal is situated at the north end of the park and connected to the visitor’s center through the Liberty Walk promenade.  The CRRNJ was established in 1839, and by the early 1900s it accommodated up to 50,000 immigrants entering America on over 100 ferry boats and 300 trains per day.

Even though the Terminal ceased to operate due to decreased passenger traffic that led to bankruptcy in the late 1960s, it is an important piece of American history. As such, it has become part as one of the state’s historical landmarks, and now displays exhibits and events for visitors to allow people to experience the history our ancestors lived.

From the nature lovers to the scientists

There is a little for everyone at Liberty State Park.

• For the family gatherers: there is a very nice picnic area by the Visitor’s center to accommodate a family reunion for some nice bar-be-que.
• For the nature lovers: there are miles of greenery, different birds and species local to New Jersey and the Hudson waterfront.
• For the photographers: amazing views of NYC, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty that can’t be missed. The LSP is a great place to take pictures for Instagram.
• For the scientists: the west portion of the park holds the Liberty Science Center, so if you want to get the Starfleet Academy experience for the Star Trek lovers or learn more about our planet than visiting the LSC is a must. Check the LSC for current shows and events.

How about some fireworks

Fourth of July is a huge holiday in the US. So, if you end up traveling to New Jersey/New York around Independence Day, don’t miss the fireworks. As most tourists stick around New York City to see them, how about getting out of the city and see them over NYC? Liberty State Park offers a remarkable view of New York City, so once the fireworks lit up the city it will be an unforgettable experience. 

Lastly, for my dog-lovers out there, Liberty State Park is dog-friendly (required to be on a leash), so make sure you bring Fido with you to get some exercise and fresh air.
