5 Ways to Stay Safe While Traveling

If you have a Traveling adventure coming up then chances are you’re already packed, you’ve planned your route and you’re excited to touch down in a new country and experience a completely new culture. While so many of us plan everything to the letter, we tend to neglect some of the other important issues that need addressing when we head abroad. Issues such as safety.

Negative traveling stories aren’t exactly rare, but there are definitely steps you can take to ensure that you stay safe, have a great time and make happy memories that will last a lifetime. Read on for some simple safety tips that will keep you out of too much trouble!

1. Travel Insurance.

Yawn. I know – arranging your Insurance isn’t exactly thrilling, but if anything does go wrong then at least you know you’re covered, and your family can breathe a little easier. Getting yourself a good travel insurance policy from medex (now safetrip) for example will ensure that your covered if you luggage is damaged in transit or lost, if your flight is delayed or cancelled or if there’s a problem with your airline. Your travel medical insurance is there for broken bones, illnesses, medication cover, and will be a huge relief if you suddenly need medical assistance.

2. Trust Your Instincts.

Remember all those rules your parents taught you when you first started going out on your own? Well, the same still applies to when you’re traveling. If something doesn’t feel right, whether you think you’re being followed, watched, or you’re in a situation that’s making you feel uncomfortable, leave at the earliest opportunity.

3. Stay Sober.

This one is easier said then done (trust me, I know)! You’re traveling the world and want to enjoy yourself while you do it, so you’re likely to spend many nights in bars and on beaches, drinking with new friends, locals and travelers like yourself. I’m trying not to be a killjoy – but know your limits. Don’t feel pressured into keeping up with those around you. Feel free to politely refuse that extra drink and leave when you’ve had enough.

4. Get Some Rest.

It’s easy to get swallowed up by your new surroundings and want to fill your time with as many activities and experiences as possible but remember to take it slow and take a couple of rest days, either in your accommodation, or simply take a guided tour instead or sit in a café for an afternoon and watch the world go by. Your body will be glad of the break and you’ll be better at keeping your wits about you.

5. Walk With Confidence.

Wandering around the busy city streets, trying to translate the street signs with your little handbook, scratching your head and burying your nose deep in a map are all tell tale signs that you don’t belong. Making you a potential prime target for thieves, hustlers and con artists. Walk with confidence and with purpose and you’ll blend in a little better. If you are genuinely lost, then don’t worry – just head into the nearest café or bar and ask for help.
