KUHL Renegade Pant Review

Overall

With its Renegade Pant, KUHL has achieved the impossible – make a hiking pant that actually looks good. Being ready to hike at a moment’s notice no longer means you have to look like a total dork.

For the past few years, prAna Stretch Zion pants have been my go-to for hiking. That’s why I included them in my Best Hiking Pants for Men post. Recently, I started wearing the KUHL Renegade Pant and I’ve got to admit – my prAnas have been tucked away in a drawer ever since.

By no stretch of the imagination am I knocking the Stretch Zion pant. As I mentioned, it’s served me well for years, and as a result it’s pretty worn. For the past couple of months, I’ve been wearing the Renegade Pant almost all the time and it still looks new (someday it won’t).

In good conscience, I can’t say the Renegade Pant is the best hiking pant. I still think the Stretch Zion holds that title. However, it’s got a lot going for it and there are some things about it that I like even better.

Methods

KUHL’s outreach team sent me a pair of Renegades in exchange for some coverage.

I’ve been wearing them all over, doing all sorts of activities: Hiking, walking, beach bumming in SoCal… I’ve even played a few games of pickup basketball in them! Oh, and my 2-year-old daughter has tested out the water resistance by spilling her drinks on them. Most of the liquid beads up, making it easy to swipe off with my bare hand.

Features

Rating: 8/10

The Renegade Pant is made of a noteworthy fabric that strikes the perfect balance between stretchy, durable, and anti-abrasive. KUHL’s website refers to it as DURALUX and notes that it’s comprised of 95% nylon, 5% spandex.

It also has a DWR finish that repels water and the DURALUX fabric is quick-drying.

I LOVE the way KUHL designed the Renegade Pant’s eight pockets. Two in the front, two in the back (with velcro so you don’t lose your wallet), two zippered side-pockets, a stealth cell phone pocket, and a 3D cell phone pocket.

The prAna Stretch Zion has snaps that you can use to hold the pant legs up and the Renegade Pant doesn’t. I have to say, I do lament this every time I bend down and re-roll my Renegades.

Durability

Rating: 9/10

My Renegades have held up great over two months of heavy use and normal washing/drying.  A few years down the road, I’ll provide another update.

Comfort

Rating: 9/10

Normally, I’m a size 32 so that’s what I ordered from KUHL. The Renegade Pant is a smidgen smaller than I hoped for but not uncomfortably so.

Style

Rating: 10/10

KUHL’s brand name is not a farce. The Renegades look cool. I’ll go ahead and say it – they’re much cooler than the prAna Stretch Zions that I wore for so long.

The Renegades are cut to fit around my legs better, especially around the ankles. The Zions are just too wide! Let’s leave the bell bottoms back in the 1970s, where they belong 😂

Value

Rating: 9/10

When you consider how great these pants are, they’re priced competitively. I think $85 is a reasonable price to pay for a quality pant that’s as versatile as the Renegade.
